THEY’VE BEEN BETTER

Connecticut-Whale_thumb_thumb_thumb_[2]      VERSUS      Providence

Sunday afternoon in Providence the Connecticut Whale could not find an answer for Carter Camper who’s hat-trick sealing third goal sunk the New York Rangers’ AHL affiliate 4-3 at the Dunkin Donuts Center in front of a raucous crowd of 10,951.

After Kelsey Tessier lifted the Whale out of a second period daze with a dramatic goal to erase what was a two-goal deficit and knot the score at three just 1:55 into the third period. The Whale picked up their game and kept pushing for more, but Camper, a Rocky River, OH native, followed up a Calle Ridderwall rebound off the chest of Cam Talbot (11-12-0, 35 saves) and backhanded it into the net for the game winner.

“We got that big one in the third (from Tessier),” Connecticut head coach Ken Gernander told the Whale’s Brian Ring after the game. “I thought things were moving in the right direction and they got that quick one and it’s hard to come back on the road when the other team is given the lead like that.”

11-OF-12: AND IT DIDN’T SEEM LIKE ENOUGH

Connecticut-Whale_thumb_thumb_thumb_[1]      VERSUS      Bridgeport

“All good things must come to an end,” goes the old English proverb. For the Connecticut Whale their five-game winning streak ended in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before 7,693 at the Webster Bank Arena Sunday afternoon.

David Ullstrom used defenseman Tim Erixon as a screen just 37 seconds into overtime and fired it over the glove of Chad Johnson (15-10-5, 40 saves) to finish off a game that had both teams digging and clawing to get any traction at all through the game’s first 60 minutes.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CRUSH A MONARCHY?

Connecticut-Whale_thumb_thumb_thumb_      VERSUS      Manchester

The Connecticut Whale struck three times in a span of just 1:31 in the second period and then rode solid goaltending by Chad Johnson to win their fifth straight game 4-1 at the Verizon Wireless Center in Manchester over the Monarchs Saturday night.

In the second period, newcomer Casey Wellman and Jonathan Audy- Marchessault  set each other up for goals just nine seconds apart at 12:01 and 12:10 respectively and Kris Newbury scored on the power play 1:22 later to break the game open for the visiting Whale. The two goals by Wellman and Audy-Marchessault were just one second off the team record that came against the former Albany River Rats on January 5, 2002. Both goals in the record eight seconds came off the stick of then Hartford Wolf Pack centerman Benoit Dusablon.

STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED: BUT NOT TOO MANY

Connecticut-Whale_thumb_thumb_thumb_[2]      VERSUS      Springfield Falcons

There is something about the entire New York Rangers organization in 2011-2012…they just seem to dialed in to winning…even when they’re losing.

In New York, the Rangers are tops in the Eastern Conference and are three points behind the President’s Trophy leading Detroit Red Wings. The Rangers have four games in hand.

In Greenville of the ECHL, the Road Warriors are fifth overall in their conference and just five points out of the top spot in their conference and are 6-3-0-1 in their last ten games.

NOW THAT’S MORE LIKE IT

Connecticut-Whale_thumb_thumb_thumb_      VERSUS      Syracuse

Amazing what the changing of the calendar and some personnel changes can do for a team. After the Connecticut Whale spent the month of January making up for being so good from mid-November to mid-December by not winning a game, the team has found their footing again and won their third straight 3-1 over the visiting Syracuse Crunch Tuesday night.

“It wasn’t a great start. Fortunately we picked it up toward the end there and got some big goals on special teams that helped and we were able to get our two points tonight,” Said a much more relaxed Whale head coach Ken Gernander. (Chad Johnson) was real strong again in net (Tuesday) and made some big saves.”

WHALE WEEKLY: February 6 – 12, 2012

Bob CrawfordBY: Bob Crawford, Voice of the Connecticut Whale

The Whale finished the first week of February with their best stretch of 2012 to date, snapping an eleven-game winless streak with back-to-back wins over Albany and Hershey. Connecticut knocked off the Albany Devils, 3-2, at the XL Center on Friday night, before besting the Hershey Bears, 4-1, on the road Saturday before nearly 11,000 fans. Tommy Grant and Kris Newbury both had two-goal weekends, and Mats Zuccarello had three assists, to highlight the Whale’s offense. Chad Johnson made 39 saves in Saturday night’s win, his second of two victories to begin the month.

SPOTLIGHT: STATE OF THE LEAGUE

Bruce BerletBY: Bruce Berlet

The biggest news out of AHL president and CEO Dave Andrews’ State of the League Address during the All-Star Classic is video review of disputed goals is one step from becoming a reality.

Andrews said the AHL board of governors will vote on whether to adopt replay at its meeting in Chicago in May.

“It’s pretty hard to logically argue we shouldn’t have a system that gets it right more often than not or helps us get it right in those circumstances,” Andrews told the media in Atlantic City, N.J.

SPOTLIGHT: AHL ALL-STAR GAME

Bruce BerletBY: Bruce Berlet

The Eastern Conference lost a four-goal lead and a shootout in the AHL All-Star Game on Monday night that had a definite Connecticut Whale flavor.

Rookie Jonathan Audy-Marchessault scored on his first shift of the game and had a goal and two assists in the first period with teammate and linemate Mats Zuccarello before the Western Conference rallied for an 8-7 victory before 6,113 at historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Audy-Marchessault, one of the few undrafted players among the AHL’s elite, scored only 2:06 into the game and set up Zuccarello for a breakaway goal late in the first period as the Eastern Conference took a 6-2 lead after 20 minutes.

GIMME A BREAK – AN ALL-STAR BREAK

Connecticut-Whale_thumb_thumb_thumb_[2]      VERSUS      Springfield Falcons

The late, great Gilda Radner’s character, “Roseanne Rosannadannna” used to say to great laughs, “If it’s not one thing, it’s another…” Those words rang very true Saturday night for the Connecticut Whale, but nobody was laughing as the New York Rangers’ top farm team dropped a 2-1 decision and lost their eleventh straight (0-6-3-2) to the Springfield Falcons before the season’s second largest crowd of 11,181.

After struggling to maintain discipline by taking foolish and avoidable penalties the night before against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton that left them shorthanded seven times, they played more cautiously Saturday and were only shorthanded twice.  But somehow along with the penalties went the passion as they played very uninspired hockey for two periods before finding the right balance between aggressive and overly aggressive with a strong sense of urgency in their play for the third period. As it turned out though, it was a matter of, “too little, too late” mixed with a a costly mistake and finished off by a generous portion of excellent goaltending  by the Falcons’ Paul Dainton (4-2-0, 24 saves) that would do them in. LOSING…THE LOSING

Connecticut-Whale_thumb_thumb_thumb_      VERSUS      Albany Devils

Well there that wasn’t so hard now was it?

The newly remodeled Connecticut Whale fell behind early but stuck to their game plan and scored two power play goal en route to a 3-2 win over the Albany Devils Friday night in front of 4,028 at the XL Center.

With Aaron Voros released from his PTO and Randy McNaught having been sent to Greenville to join the Road Warriors in the ECHL and the input of Rangers vets Wojtek Wolski and Jeff Woywitka added for a two-week conditioning stint, the Whale had an entirely different feel both in terms of the level of talent on the ice and the way they played the game.
