Swamp Rabbits medical trainer recognized with league award after second season in the Upstate

BY: Brian Tosti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, in conjunction with the ECHL, have announced that Matt Aiello has been selected as the recipient of the 2017-18 ECHL Athletic Trainer of the Year Award, presented by CCM. Aiello takes home both honors for athletic trainers in the ECHL this season after earning a trip to the 2018 CCM/ECHL All-Star Classic in January.

The winner of the award was determined through a vote of the league’s equipment managers and athletic trainers.

Aiello wrapped up his second season with the Swamp Rabbits after being nominated to represent the league in Indianapolis at the annual All-Star Classic. It was the first time that a Greenville athletic trainer has won the award and just the second time a member of the Swamp Rabbits staff has earned an ECHL honor (Ryan Martin – 2011-12 Equipment Manager of the Year).

The Cary, Illinois native has over seven years of experience in the field since earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Illinois State University. Aiello began his career in the Central Hockey League with the Bloomington Prairie Thunder. Over the next five seasons, he held the athletic trainer position for the CHL’s Bloomington Blaze, Southern Professional Hockey League’s Bloomington Thunder and United States Hockey League’s Bloomington Thunder.

Aiello becomes the 11th winner of the award since its creation in 2008. He is also the fifth trainer to win the award after only two seasons in the ECHL. This season, Aiello worked his 450th career game behind the bench.

The Greenville Road Warriors slugged it out for over 60 minutes with the Chicago Express on Sunday at the BI-LO Center and emerged with a 7-6 overtime victory. The win improved Greenville to 29-18-3 on the season.

Click here for tonight’s box score.

The Road Warriors were not looking to play the role of gracious hosts with Chicago making its first, and only, appearance in Greenville this season. They brought a ton of pressure early in the first but some big saves by Chicago’s Peter Mannino kept the Express in the game. It took a sharp wrist shot by Brendan Connolly with 4:24 left to play in the first to put the Road Warriors on the board first. The power play goal allowed Connolly to tie his own club record with a 12-game point streak. Connolly’s former teammate with the Elmira Jackals, Max Gratchev, tied the game for Chicago 21 seconds later, but Connolly set up Marc-Olivier Vallerand 1:25 after that as Greenville reclaimed the lead. Vallerand’s goal broke a 6-game goal drought. Jason Missiaen turned in 11 saves in the frame to allow Greenville to take the one-goal lead into the break.

Greenville looked to be in good shape early in the second period as Bretton Cameron finished off a 3-on-2 rush to give the Road Warriors a two-goal lead at 3-1. It was Cameron’s second goal of the week for the Road Warriors with Sean Berkstersser and Jeremy Gouchie netting the helpers. But a power play goal by Pierre-Luc Faubert at 8:49 started a three-goal burst for Chicago that took just 2:27. Josh Burrows and Chaz Johnson followed Faubert’s goal to give the Express its first lead of the game at 4-3. The Road Warriors managed six shots after Cameron’s goal but none proved to be the tying score they coveted and Chicago took the advantage into the third.

The third period proved to be just as wild, if not more so than the first two. Greenville raced out to a 5-4 lead thanks to goals by Jason Wilson and Brandon Wong in the first 4:04 of the frame. But the Express responded with a pair of goals from Johnson, a minute and two seconds apart, to cap a hat trick and restore Chicago’s lead at 6-5. But before they could enjoy the lead too much, with a power play just expired, Connolly lifted a backhander past Mannino to knot the game at six. Greenville hung on for overtime by killing 1:22 of a power play through the end of regulation then also stopping Chicago’s power play cold in the first 38 seconds of overtime. Then in the final minute, for the second straight Sunday home game, the Road Warriors earned the overtime win with Jyri Niemi blistering a slap shot home for his fourth goal of the season.

Missiaen stopped 34 shots in earning his 11th win of the season. The Road Warriors were 1-for-6 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Road Warriors return home on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 to take on the Gwinnett Gladiators. The Greenville Road Warriors rang in 2012 with a 4-2 win over the Chicago Express on Sunday evening at the Sears Centre. The win improved the Road Warriors’ record to 18-10-2 on the season.

Click here for tonight’s box score.

The Road Warriors were out-shot 8-0 over the first half of the first period and while Jason Missiaen played strongly over that stretch, he couldn’t completely hold Chicago at bay. At 3:47, Pierre-Luc Faubert took a drop pass in the high slot and sent a shot over Missiaen’s right shoulder. The Road Warriors were in danger of falling further behind when back-to-back penalties by Brent Cornelius and Jyri Niemi left Chicago with a 5-on-3 power play. With some timely saves from Missiaen the Road Warriors made it out of the woods unscathed and went on the offensive. But six shots in the first weren’t enough to beat Chicago’s Rob Nolan.

Greenville’s offense came to life in a big way in the second period with a pair of goals which allowed the Road Warriors to take a brief lead. But Chicago cashed in a 2-on-1 rush shortly after Greenville’s second goal to draw even. Justin Bowers slipped to the front of the net from the left-wing corner and shuffled the puck through Nolan’s legs to pull Greenville even at one with 12:38 gone by in the period. Bowers’ tally was followed by Brett Robinson slamming home a rebound off of a Wes Cunningham point shot at 16:02. Before Greenville could enjoy the lead for long, Scott Wietecha finished off a rush with Chad Painchaud 52 seconds after Robinson’s goal.

Greenville goalie Jason Missiaen was at his busiest in the third period but was also at his best and he stopped all 14 shots he saw from the Express and allowed for the Road Warriors to reclaim the lead. Bowers picked up his second of the night by tipping in a Cunningham point shot just before the third was half over. Chicago desperately tried to even the score and force overtime, but Marc-Olivier Vallerand scored into an empty net with 15 seconds left to play and set the final score.

Missiaen made 31 saves in earning his sixth win of the season. The Road Warriors were 0-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Road Warriors return to home ice to take on the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:35 p.m. at the BI-LO Center on Thursday, January 12. It’s a Road Warriors’ Throwback Thursday with $2 select draft beers, fountain drinks, hot dogs, and pretzels! Greenville Road Warriors VERSUS       Chicago Express

BY: Ray Schmitt , Voice of the Greenville Road Warriors

The Greenville Road Warriors defeated the Chicago Express 3-2 in overtime thanks, in part, to the efforts of goalie Brian Hince who was making his first career ECHL start. The Road Warriors improved their record to 17-10-2 on the season.

Click here for tonight’s box score.

Playing without either of their regular goaltenders, Nic Riopel and Jason Missiaen, the Road Warriors made sure to give new goalie Hince as much help as possible in the first against the Express. Greenville limited Chicago to six shots on goal and Hince was there to turn away each attempt. Chicago brought its best pressure early in the frame when Sean Berkstresser took a hooking minor 3:08 into the contest. After killing off Chicago’s only power play of the period, the Road Warriors received a chance of their own on the man advantage, but could not find a way to beat Chicago goalie Paul Dainton.

Without many scoring chances in the first, the Road Warriors wasted no time getting the offense in gear in the second as Jyri Niemi beat Dainton with a wrist shot from the left point. The goal was Niemi’s first in the ECHL and came 53 seconds into the second. The Road Warriors generated a number of quality chances on a power play that shortly followed, but were unable to extend the lead. Nathan Lutz then capitalized on a breakaway that evened the score at 15:10 of the second. The Road Warriors out-shot Chicago 14-7 in the frame but headed into the third with the score deadlocked.

Once again it was an early strike from a Greenville defenseman that put the Road Warriors up by a goal in the third. Francis Meilleur cashed in on a 3-on-2 rush with Justin Bowers and Brandon Wong 1:37 into the period. The goal was Meilleur’s second of the season. The Road Warriors had to kill off multiple Chicago power plays in the third and nearly survived with the lead intact, but a shot from Kyle Ostrow deflected off of Jeff Caister and past Hince to tie the score with less than four minutes to play. At the end of the third, the Express’ Chaz Johnson was whistled for cross checking and put Greenville on a power play to begin overtime. With the advantage, the Road Warriors scored their lone power play goal of the night for the game winner. The goal appeared to come off the stick of Brandon Wong and rip a hole in the top right corner of the net, but it was credited on the score sheet to Justin Bowers.

Hince turned in 22 saves in earning the victory. The Road Warriors were 1-for-3 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Road Warriors return home to take on the Gwinnett Gladiators on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 7:35 p.m. at the BI-LO Center. The Road Warriors will host another Throwback Thursday which features select draft beers, fountain drinks, hot dogs, and pretzels for just $2! The Greenville Road Warriors announced today that they have signed goaltender Bryan Hince out of Knoxville of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

Recapping Last Week:

12/22 vs. Reading: OTL 2-3

Box Score

Brandon Wong provided a pair of goals but it wasn’t enough offense as the Royals received two goals from Olivier Labelle, including a power play strike in OT, to skate away with their third win over Greenville this season. The Road Warriors peppered Reading goalie Mark Owuya with 39 shots in the game, but after Wong converted twice in the first period, Owuya shut Greenville down. The Road Warriors had seven chances on the power play in the game, including two 5-on-3’s but were held without a power play goal. Nic Riopel sustained the loss in net for Greenville as he stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced.

12/23 vs. Reading: L 4-6

Box Score

Brendan Connolly recorded the second hat trick in the Road Warriors’ history last Friday, but it was not enough to overcome a Reading power play that went 3-for-6 to power the Royals to victory. Connolly’s first of the night came midway through the first to slice a 2-0 Reading lead in half, but the Royals built it up to 4-1 before the opening frame expired. Greenville out-scored Reading 3-2 over the final two periods and had tied the game at four when Justin Bowers banked home a power play goal 5:58 into the third. Reading bounced back with a 4-on-3 power play goal from Rob Kwiet to reclaim the lead then Olivier Labelle capped the scoring with his fourth goal of the week with 7:20 left in the game. Jason Missiaen played the entire game and stopped 24 of the shots he faced.

Quick Hits:

*Both hat tricks scored in the Road Warriors’ history have come in losses. Brandon Wong scored three in an 8-6 defeat against Gwinnett on January 14, 2011 and Brendan Connolly’s three weren’t enough offense in a 6-4 loss to Reading last Friday.

* Jason Missiaen has three shutouts in the month of December and is tied with Alaska’s Gerald Coleman and Gwinnett’s Jeff Jakaitis for the most shutouts in the ECHL. He has a .6 goals-against average in his wins this season and a .983 save percentage.

* Entering this week, the Road Warriors have played the fewest away games (10) of any team in the ECHL. Their six road wins, however are tied for fifth most in the league. Starting Saturday they play six games on the road over 10 days against the North Division. They are 10-2-1 on the road against the North Division since 2010.

* The Road Warriors have the fourth most power play chances in home games in the ECHL at 71, but have the 12th rated home power play at 18.3 percent. Away from the BI-LO Center the Road Warriors have the top PP at 29.3 percent.

* Greenville’s third period defense is the fifth best in the ECHL with 24 goals given up in 27 games. The Road Warriors have been nearly as stingy in the first period with 26 goals given up which are the seventh fewest in the league.
