QUICK BITS

SOUCH A FUN TIME IN THE ATL

In Greenville’s two previous meetings with the Gladiators, Carter Souch has stolen the show for the Swamp Rabbits with a pair of multi-point performances. In the first meeting, on November 1, Souch tallied a pair of goals despite the 7-4 loss for his team. In the second meeting last Tuesday morning, Souch, again, found his way into a multi-point game, scoring the game-winning goal in the second period to add to his assist on the first-period tally. Souch is averaging a point-per-game through his first 13 games and is just three goals shy of tying his rookie season mark of nine in 22-23.

THE ROAD POWER-PLAY WARRIORS

Atlanta’s loss to Jacksonville on Tuesday night saw the Icemen post a pair of power-play goals at Gas South Arena. Greenville enters Wednesday’s meeting with the league’s best road power-play unit, converting on nearly 39 percent of its attempts. This season, seven of the Swamp Rabbits’ 12 power-play tallies have come away from Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Josh McKechney scored the lone power-play goal for the Rabbits of the two-game series with the Gladiators last Tuesday. Despite Greenville’s lethality on the man-advantage, Atlanta has managed to score one of two shorthanded goals allowed by the Swamp Rabbits.

KECHS HITS HIS STRIDE

Forward Josh McKechney has found his groove over the last four games for the Swamp Rabbits. Over those four appearances, McKechney has three goals and an assist, including three points in the team’s last two games against Jacksonville. History favors McKechney in Wednesday’s meeting, as the forward has scored a goal in each of the two previous meetings against the Gladiators.

Greenville Swamp Rabbits

Greenville opened the third meeting with Savannah by scoring first, something they had yet to do in the previous two meetings, at 4:02, as Brett Kemp’s pass deflected into the back of the net for his third of the season. At 15:22, Savannah saw Robbie Fromm-Delorme score a power-play goal for the 1-1 score line.

In the second period, Carter Souch, who assisted on Kemp’s opening goal, scored his team-leading fourth of the season on the power play at 8:27 for the 2-1 advantage.

Greenville’s goaltender, Jacob Ingham, withstood 14 Ghost Pirates shots in the third period and held the line for the 2-1 final score and his second victory of the season.

QUICK BITS

SOUCH A GREAT PERFORMANCE:

Wednesday’s meeting with Atlanta proved beneficial for second-year forward Carter Souch, as the winger slotted a pair of goals in the loss. Souch recorded his fifth-career multi-point game and first of the season. In his four games, Souch is tied for the team lead in goals. His other goal came last Friday in the Rabbits’ first meeting with the Ghost Pirates.

MANNY MOVES UP:

Brannon McManus is off and running with his best stretch of games in his career. In the Rabbits’ first four games, McManus has tallied at least one point in each contest, including a two-assist night against Atlanta on Wednesday. On Sunday, against the Ghost Pirates, McManus scored his first of the season and 13th of his career. His increased lethality has earned the California native has landed himself on the top power-play unit.

KECHS RACKS EM UP:

Despite being held off the scoresheet in the most recent meeting against Savannah, Josh McKechney has posted a goal in three of his four games this season. An additional assist against the Ghost Pirates last Friday has given McKechney, who was traded to Greenville in December of 2022, his fourth point in as many games.

A FRESH START FOR THE KILL:

Last season, early struggles for the Rabbits’ shorthanded unit gave way to a final percentage of 77.7 at the end of the campaign. Head Coach Andrew Lord made the improvement of the penalty-kill a top priority, and his expectations have been met in the early goings. The Rabbits have allowed just one power-play goal against in 14 times shorthanded. Greenville’s 92.9% on the PK is ranked 5th in the league.

DULUTH, G.A – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits dropped their season opener as they fell victim to a five-goal third period as the Atlanta Gladiators pulled away for a 7-4 win on Wednesday night at Gas South Arena.

Greenville Swamp Rabbits Score

Greenville found itself on the defensive early in the first period, as the Gladiators opened the game with a number of strong chances. Atlanta broke the deadlock at 6:45, as Jackson Pierson netted his second of the season. Later in the period, at 12:17, Mitchell Fossier used a two-on-one shorthanded break to score his fifth of the season.

Out of the intermission, the Rabbits responded just 2:15 in, as Carter Souch scored his second of the season to cut the Atlanta lead in half. After continued shelling of the Gladiators’ net, Greenville, again, found the back of the net with Nick Prkusic’s first career goal at 14:56.

In the third, Greenville captured its first lead of the night just 2:03 in, as Josh McKechney paddled his third of the season into the net. The lead was short-lived, as  Alex Whelan scored a deflected puck into the Greenville net at 3:41 before scoring a second time 1:06 later for the 4-3 Atlanta lead. Greenville answered back at 5:34 with Souch’s second of the game and third of the season. At 6:20, Atlanta recaptured the lead on a goal that Luke Prokop tipped in the net before extending the advantage to a pair of goals just 25 seconds later with Reece Vitelli’s second of the season. The 7-4 score-line was solidified at 19:35, as Carson Gisewicz scored the empty-netter.

With the loss, the Swamp Rabbits fall to 3-1-0-0, while the Gladiators improve to 4-0-0-0

The Swamp Rabbits return to Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville on Friday, November 3, for a meeting with the Savannah Ghost Pirates at 7 p.m.

QUICK BITS

WATCH OUT FOR THE ONE-TIMER

Jake Smith is the current ECHL leader in game-winning goals (2). In just three games, Smith has put the Rabbits on top twice. His first game-winner was also his first goal of the season; a one-timer from the circle put the Rabbits up 3-2 during Greenville’s season opener against the Norfolk Admirals on Oct. 21. Smith came to the rescue again on Sunday, Oct. 29, against the Savannah Ghost Pirates with two third-period power play goals to solidify the Swamp Rabbits undefeated record. Smith pulled out the one-timer and found the back of the net at 8:25 and again with 19.7 seconds remaining for a 4-3 Greenville win. His three goals this season make up three-fourths of the team’s power play goals this season and make him the current team goal leader.

HIT THE ROAD

The Swamp Rabbits are currently ranked No. 1 in road power play performances by a wide margin; the Rabbits have scored 100% of their road power plays. Jake Smith scored three power play goals for Greenville–including both road power play goals–while Josh McKechney netted the other one during the Swamp Rabbits’ season opener against the Norfolk Admirals. The No. 2 ranked team–the Kansas City Mavericks–have only scored on 45.5% of their man advantages while away, and the No. 3 ranked team–the Atlanta Gladiators–have scored on 44.4%.

KILLIN’ IT

Not only have they been proficient on the power play, but the Swamp Rabbits have also killed 10/11 total penalties (90.9%). They’re ranked No. 6 in the league, following four teams who’ve not allowed a single power play goal (TOL, ADK, JAX, and ATL) and the Iowa Heartlanders, who have killed 12/13 (92.3%).

EARLY AND OFTEN

Greenville’s first-period scoring is the most potent opening attack in the ECHL, tallying seven of their 12 goals this season in the opening 20 minutes. While the opening period has proven successful, the Rabbits have struggled out of the intermission, posting just one goal in the second period. An early advantage can benefit the Rabbits tonight, as Atlanta has netted eight goals in the middle frame.

QUICK BITS

A HOPPIN’ START:

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits prevailed in their season opener last weekend against the Norfolk Admirals, 3-2. Josh McKechney netted Greenville’s first goal of the season at 6:19 for an early 1-0 lead. Just four minutes later, Brett Kemp added a goal of his own. Though Norfolk responded with a goal of its own just 24 seconds later and again during the second period to tie the score at 2-2, the Rabbits’ momentum was too much to overcome. Jake Smith scored the game-winner on a 5-on-3 man advantage in the third period to solidify Greenville’s first win.

WELCOMING WYLIE:

The Rabbits are welcoming a new addition to the squad ahead of their game against Savannah on Friday, Oct. 27: Wyatte Wylie. The 23-year-old defenseman from Everett, WA, will head south from Ontario to join the Swamp Rabbits. He was drafted 127th overall in 2018 by the Philadelphia Flyers. He hasn’t made his debut with the Reign yet this season, but Wylie scored 10 points (3G, 7A) in 45 games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms last season, whom he’d been with since the 2020-21 season.

KEMP’S HOT START:

Brett Kemp wasted little time reminding fans that he is an offensive impact player in the win over Norfolk last Saturday night. Following up on the 2022-23 season that saw the now third-year Rabbit post 14 multi-point games and six three-point games, Kemp started the 2023-24 campaign with a three-point performance, posting a goal and two assists.

UNTIL NEXT TIME:

The Swamp Rabbits will face the second-year Savannah Ghost Pirates again this Sunday, Oct. 29, for their first road game of the season. This will be Greenville’s second of twelve total meetings–the first of six away–with Savannah throughout the 2023-24 season. Last season, the Swamp Rabbits fell short against the Ghost Pirates in their final three consecutive matchups.

FEAR THE EARS:

Looking ahead, the Swamp Rabbits will travel to Atlanta to take on the Gladiators next Wednesday, Nov. 1. During the pre-season, the Rabbits defeated Atlanta 6-3 with an explosive second period. In the matchup, the Gladiators scored a pair of shorthanded goals during the first period for what they believed to be a comfortable lead. However, the ‘Bits came out firing in the second period, netting four goals in 20 minutes. Though Atlanta fought back in the third with a goal from Dylan Carabia less than one minute into the period to bring the score to 5-3, Greenville netted two additional goals, courtesy of Ethan Somoza and Jake Smith, to secure the 6-3 win.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Jake Smith’s third-period power-play goal lifted the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to a 3-2 win over the Norfolk Admirals on Opening Night at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Greenville Swamp Rabbits

Greenville wasted little time welcoming the fans back to the arena, as Josh McKechney netted the first goal of the 2023-24 campaign just 6:19 into the opening period. The Rabbits continued the hot start, as Brett Kemp earned his first of the season at 10:01 for the 2-0 lead. The celebration was short-lived, as Blake Murray scored a power-play goal for Norfolk at 10:25, just six seconds into the man advantage.

After the intermission, Admirals added a second goal, a Domenick Fensore snipe at 2:04, to level the game at 2-2 and swing momentum Norfolk’s way for a majority of the period. After trailing 16-14 in shots after the first, the Admirals outshot the Rabbits 8-5 in the second.

In the third, the Swamp Rabbits ramped up the pressure, shooting nine times and capitalizing on a 5-on-3 power-play, as Jake Smith scored his first as a Rabbit, a one-timer from the circle, for the 3-2 advantage. Greenville’s goaltender made several late-period saves to prevent the Admirals from finding the tying goal en route to his first victory of the season.

Three Stars –

  2. Jake Smith (GVL)

Mark Louis Greenville Swamp RabbitsBy: Mark Shelley, Greenville Swamp Rabbits

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, an ECHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, announced today that the club has signed veteran defenseman Mark Louis to an ECHL contract ahead of the 2023-24 Season presented by Bon Secours.

Louis, 36, signs with the Swamp Rabbits after spending the last seven seasons in Europe and six seasons with the Cardiff Devils of the Elite Ice Hockey League in the United Kingdom. The 6’4″, 225-pounder began his European tenure during the 2016-17 season and appeared in 264 games for Cardiff since then. Louis helped Cardiff capture a pair of EIHL Championships, one in 2017 and the other under now Swamp Rabbits Head Coach/General Manager Andrew Lord in 2018. In his final season with the Wales-based club, Louis recorded four assists in 43 games.

“Louis is a big signing for our organization,” said Lord. “He brings veteran experience, size, toughness, and a great desire to compete and win. He and I had several good years working together overseas, and I’m thrilled to work alongside him again. I know he’s hungry to have a great season, and he will bring an overall game that not many players can bring anymore in today’s modern game.”

“I’m really looking forward to this upcoming season in Greenville,” said Louis. “Lordo and the organization have built something special over the last few years, and I’m excited to be a part of that.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Louis briefly departed Cardiff for a single season with HK Dukla Michalovce in Slovakia for the 2020-21 campaign.

A native of Ponoka, Alberta, Louis began his professional career during the 2011-12 season, appearing in 23 games for the Portland Pirates in the American Hockey League. In April 2012, Louis was signed to an NHL deal with the Phoenix Coyotes, remaining with the Pirates for nearly three seasons before his rights were traded to the New York Islanders in 2015.

During the 2015-16 season, Louis played his only ECHL season for the Orlando Solar Bears, skating in 71 games and posting 10 points (3g, 7a).
