Hartford, CT, January 7, 2018Reid Boucher scored a hat trick and added an assist for the Utica Comets, and Michael Carcone had a goal and two assists, in a 5-1 Utica victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack Sunday at the XL Center.

Utica opened the scoring 4:35 into the first period, when Boucher, in his first game back from a recall stint with the parent Vancouver Canucks, ripped a shot in the top corner past the glove hand of Wolf Pack goaltender Alexandar Georgiev. Assists were credited to David Dziurzynski and Jalen Chatfield.

At 13:28, the Comets received their second power play opportunity, when Ryan Graves was whistled for boarding.  Just 33 seconds into the man-up situation, Boucher struck again, scoring his second goal of the game, and 15th on the season. Philip Holm and Carcone earned the assists on the play.

Hartford battled and created some offensive chances throughout the period, but the Pack would remain scoreless for the first 40 minutes.

“Their defenseman did a real good job of keeping us away from the front of the net,” said Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge, “but when we did have some chances, we were sending shots from the point.”

The second frame had a similar start to the first. At the 6:57 mark of the second, Brandon Crawley picked up a two-minute interference penalty. Utica wasted no time scoring on this chance, as Carcone let a shot go from the point and Darren Archibald tipped it past Georgiev in front of the net. Boucher also assisted on the play.

No goals were scored again until the Pack foiled Utica goaltender Richard Bachman’s shutout bid at the 11:17 mark of the final frame. That was on Hartford’s fifth power play chance, with Philip Holm off for high-sticking.

The Wolf Pack swung the puck around on the power play, and Peter Holland was able to put a shot past Bachman from the right-wing boards, off of a defender in front.

Less than a minute later, at 12:12, the Wolf Pack found themselves on their heels again when Boucher cashed in for a hat trick, as he deflected Dylan Blujus’ shot from the point.

The final tally came at 16:53 after the Wolf Pack had pulled Georgiev for an extra attacker.  The Comets grabbed possession and Carcone tapped in an empty net goal to complete his three-point night.

Utica finished the game 2-for-6 on the power play, against a Wolf Pack penalty kill that had been 10-for-10 in the previous four games and 30-for-34 in the previous 11.

“It’s hard when you’re playing three [games] in three [nights],” said McCambridge after the game. “That’s a real battle to have to kill that many penalties.”

The Wolf Pack’s next action is this Wednesday night, January 10, when they head to Bridgeport to battle the Sound Tigers, the first of four straight road games for Hartford.  Faceoff is 7:00 PM and all of the action can be heard live on News Radio 1410 WPOP, and online at newsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio.  Video streaming is available at ahllive.com.

The next home game for the Wolf Pack is next Friday, January 19, when the Comets are back for a 7:15 contest.  As at all Friday-night Wolf Pack home games, fans can enjoy $1 hot dogs and $2 beers through the start of the second period, presented by Dave & Buster’s.

Hartford, CT, January 6, 2018Connor Ingram stopped 31 Hartford Wolf Pack shots, including a late-third-period penalty shot, Saturday night at the XL Center, as the Syracuse Crunch defeated the Wolf Pack, 3-2.

Mitchell Stephens scored the game-winner late in the second period for Syracuse, and Dennis Yan and Erik Condra had the other Crunch goals.  Joe Whitney and Ryan Gropp scored for the Wolf Pack, and Marek Mazanec made 28 saves.

The Wolf Pack outshot the visitors 16-8 in the third period, but could never get the equalizer past Ingram, who stopped Cole Schneider on a penalty shot with 3:30 left.

“We were able to get ourselves back in that game with a big power play goal,” said Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge after the game, “and I loved our compete.  Work ethic was there, just not able to bury at the end.”

Yan opened the scoring at the 6:04 mark of the first, batting the puck out of mid-air in the high slot, past Mazanec’s stick side. Syracuse’s leading point scorer, Matthew Peca, and Daniel Walcott both assisted on the play.

Only 49 seconds into the second period, Hartford got their second power play opportunity, as Adam Erne received two minutes for interference. This man-up chance would prove successful for the Pack, as Whitney buried home a rebound chance off a shot from Scott Kosmachuk at 2:49. John Gilmour also assisted on the goal.

Just 1:31 later, at the 4:20 mark, Gropp beat Ingram with a shot from the half-wall to Ingram’s left. Adam Tambellini picked up the lone assist.

Unfortunately for the Wolf Pack, the Crunch responded well and scored two quick goals late in the period. The first came at 16:11, when former Wolf Pack captain Matt Bodie let a shot go from the point and Condra was in front of the net for the tip, Kevin Lynch also assisted.

Only 1:28 after that, at 17:39, Stephens drove to the net and beat Mazanec high on the glove side to regain Syracuse’s lead. Erik Cernak earned the sole assist on the play.

The third period brought plenty of action, but both goalies were perfect in the final frame.  Schneider was awarded the Wolf Pack’s first penalty shot of the season at the 16:30 mark after he had broken into the clear and was upended by Ben Thomas, but Ingram made a pad stop on Schneider’s bid.

“I thought we had a good push in the third, and he (Ingram) came up with some big saves,” said Gropp. “He’s a good goalie, so we need to take the positives from that game and get ready for tomorrow.”

The Wolf Pack are right back at the XL Center on Sunday, hosting the Utica Comets in a 5:00 PM game.

HARTFORD, CT – In a hard-fought divisional game, the visiting Springfield Thunderbirds scored with just 4.9 seconds remaining in regulation to earn a 5-4 win and drop the Hartford Wolf Pack to their third straight regulation loss.

The Pack record falls to 13-15-3-3 (32 points) and remains in seventh place.

Ryan Sproul lost control of the puck behind the Pack net resulting from an untimely handoff by Anthony DeAngelo. The puck went right to the Thunderbirds’ Jayce Hawryluk on the left side of the net. Hawryluk then spotted Curtis Valk open on the right side. Valk dished off a pretty pass to Josh Brown as the d-man was charging hard off the right point. Brown wired his first goal of the season past Alexander Georgiev for the game-winner.

The win was just the third of the season for the T-Birds whose record improves to 14-19-1-1 (30 points) stranding them in 8th and last place in the Atlantic Division.

“A tough one with the amount of chances we generated on 48 shots (season high). We deserved a better fate,” said head coach Keith McCambridge. “Their goalie played outstanding, was really good and conceivably you think you would get at least a point. We really should have had two. We have to learn to play in pressure situations. It only is going to get more magnified the higher you to get to NHL.”

Captain Joe Whitney, dejected to be sure, tried to find the silver lining from the loss. “It is all apart of the learning process, to go through heartbreak like this in moving forward. That was obviously a tough one to take, but I’m proud of the guys how hard we worked. Going down the road, we’ll remember this feeling and remember to bear down a little harder in these situations. We know every one counts, and that was the lesson we learned tonight. Some are learned the hard way.”

The third period was a wild roller-coaster-like hockey game featuring three lead changes.

After being stoned by Georgiev in the second period, Springfield’s Juho Lammikko made certain he finished the third time. Catching the puck off the Pack’s Caleb Herbert near the T-Birds blue line, Lammikko took off on a breakaway on the left wing. He cut across Georgiev and backhanded his sixth of the season over the Pack netminder’s glove hand at 3:32.

Less than a minute later, the Wolf Pack struck back.

Getting down-low pressure, Whitney, who just missed in the opening minute of the third period, tallied the tying goal.

Whitney and Adam Tambellini, who has dropped to the fourth line, played a good catch and go behind the goal line. Tambellini zipped a cross-ice pass from the right wing circle to Chris Langkow, who put a shot on goal. Whitney went to the net and got a piece of a bouncing puck that went in at 4:25 making it a 3-3 game.

“It was a series of three good plays. I was just able to get a piece of it and it was going be tough to beat him. We had three good shifts before the power-play. That goal was a huge boost for the team at that point,” Whitney remarked.

On a five-on-three power-play, Springfield goalie, Samuel Montembeault (44 saves) made four amazing saves stopping Sproul, DeAngelo, Cole Schneider and Scott Kosmachuk. The Wolf Pack finally struck gold in the second half of the two-man advantage.

Gabriel Fontaine won a faceoff. John Gilmour sent a pass to Neal Pionk at the left point. Fontaine then took a pass and wired his first professional goal between Montembeault’s pads. The T-Birds goalie looked up and shook his head in disgust that he let that one get by him. The goal came at 9:39 and gave the Wolf Pack a 4-3 lead.

“It was an entertaining game and you have two teams that have played each other eight times already. You can see the rivalry is building.”

Springfield came back as Bobby Farnham scored his second of the night and sixth of the year off a cross-ice pass that went through the box. From atop the right wing circle, Farnham beat Georgiev to the short side leaving another goalie unhappy that he let one get by him. The goal tied the game at four at 14:54.

The Pack tied the game at two on the power play despite having initial problems getting organized.

After a rush didn’t produce anything, Gilmour got the puck in the Pack zone and hit Kosmachuk coming off the bench. Kosmachuk put it in fifth-gear down the left side before snapping his eighth goal of the season to Montemebeault’s far side and off the post at 7:52.

Georgiev had a strong second half of the second period when he stopped Mike Downing and Hawryluk on back-to-back chances and then Valk on a break in just after Dawson Leedahl was stopped at the other end of the ice.

The Pack got the all-important first goal on hockey basics 101.

Steven Fogarty with a dump in. Herbert tracked it down and spotted an open Eric Selleck, who wasted little time drilling a 40-footer that surprised  Montembeault at 7:03.

58 seconds later the Thunderbirds tied the game up.

After making several good plays in front of him on Hawryluk on the doorstep, Maxim Manin maneuvered around the crowd in front of the net, got to a loose puck and put it past Georgiev into an open cage for his sixth goal of the season.

Just 1:11 later, Springfield grabbed a 2-1 lead.

Farnham was at the left point. Alexandre Grenier was in front with Pionk. Farnham took a Maxime Fortunas pass and had his 55-footer sail past Georgiev. It was Farnham’s fifth of the year and second in as many games against Hartford.

At this point, McCambridge took his timeout to settle down his troops.

“We got off the rails there a bit after a very good start. I loved it. We were sharp and focused, then we just gave up two goals on successive shift. I just tried to settle things down and not let things snowball and get things back on track.”

The Wolf Pack did their best to try to get the equalizer. Gilmour and Langkow had back-to-back shots turned aside by Montembeault. With 2:50 to go, Fogarty flipped a shot just wide late in the period.

The Pack’s PK did a great job on a five-on-three holding Springfield to just one shot on goal.

NOTES:

Pack newcomer Chris Langkow wore jersey #13.

Brandon Troock was among the scratches and after the game was reassigned back to Greenville.

Peter Holland’s suspension is done.

Ryan Gropp (lower body) remains day to day. Dan Catenacci is maybe a week away (upper body) and Dan DeSalvo is another week basis or so (upper body).

The Pack went with 11 forwards and 7 defensemen.

Langkow-Chapie-Whitney
Fogarty-Schneider-Kosmachuk
Fontaine-Leedahl-Kosmachuk
Tambellini-Herbert-Selleck

Crawley-Sproul
Graves-DeAngelo
Pionk-Pedrie
Gilmour-Sproul

Selleck had 2/3 of a “Gordie Howe hat trick” exacting some revenge on Ryan Horvat for his hit from behind on Dan DeSalvo last week in a second period scrap.

The Pack is now 3-4-0-1 in the season series with the Thunderbirds.

Vinni Lettieri leads all Pack scorers against Springfield with eight points on five goals and three assists. He is also the 12th on the AHL rookie scoring list.

Speaking of Lettieri, congratulations on scoring his first NHL goal in Detroit before family and friends who drove from frigid Minnesota for the game.

“It was nice to see and the pass came from Boo (Nieves). It was well deserved and when you see guys go up and have success, and that’s a big part of what we’re trying to do down here,” McCambridge remarked on two prospects who have graduated to New York.

Lettieri and the Rangers will be in action on New Years Day at the annual NHL Bridgestone Outdoor Winter Classic at Citi Field at 1 pm against Buffalo.

Valk now has eight points against the Wolf Pack and Lammikko has seven.

Springfield reassigned defenseman Tony Turgeon to Manchester (ECHL).

The Wolf Pack have the fifth best power play in the AHL  scoring at 20.0% two more PPG at 31 than Tucson. Ahead of the team in order are San Diego, Manitoba, Charlotte, and Iowa.

Springfield is 22nd of 30 teams at 15.8%.

On the PK the Pack is 13th at 83.8% and Springfield is 15th at 83.2 %.

Ex-Pack Chris Bourque (Hershey) leads the AHL in scoring with 39 points in 34 games, ex-Yale Bulldog Andrew Miller (Charlotte) is 7th with 32 points in 33 games and ex-Pack Marek Hrivik is 14th with Stockton 29 points in 27 games.

Ben Smith (Avon/Westminster Prep) with the Toronto Marlies, is tied for most game-winning goals in the AHL at five with Mason Appleton of Manitoba. He is also second in plus/minus at plus-22.

Philip Samuelsson (Charlotte) son of Ulf is third at plus-21.

Rookie rearguard Brandon Crawley is 3rd in rookie PM, with 45.

Ex-Pack Dylan McIlrath with Grand Rapids is fifth in the AHL in PM at 62 and 2nd in minor penalties with 21 minutes.

Hartford, CT, December 23, 2017 – A Hartford Wolf Pack streak of nine straight games without a regulation loss ended Saturday at the XL Center, in a 5-1 loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Christopher Gibson came within 1:28 of a shutout in the Bridgeport net, making 22 saves, and Casey Bailey and Devon Toews had a goal and an assist apiece.  Ryan Sproul had the only goal for the Wolf Pack, who were 6-0-1-2 in their previous nine games.

The first period was plagued by a plethora of penalties. The game started with a fight between Peter Holland and Travis St. Denis just 2:31 in, then Anthony DeAngelo and Kyle Burroughs also dropped the gloves at 13:05. Sebastian Aho of the Sound Tigers scored on a power play at 18:59, the only goal in the first and Aho’s ninth of the season.

“They capitalized there in the first and it’s hard to get momentum back when you lose it,” Wolf Pack captain Joe Whitney said. “The stretch we’ve been on for the last month or so, we’ve found our identity. It got away from us a little here tonight.”

The Sound Tigers added two more goals in the second period, 1:38 apart.

At 13:56, Casey Bailey made it a 2-0 Bridgeport lead, finding a loose puck and ripping it past Hartford goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, after a Michael Dal Colle shot was blocked.

Then, at 15:34, Ross Johnston scored on a breakaway, set up by Toews.

Connor Jones upped the Sound Tiger lead to 4-0 at 12:52 of the third, coming out of the penalty box to jump on a loose puck.  Jones had Georgiev all to himself and finished the play with a shot to the glove side.

The Wolf Pack prevented a Gibson shutout at 18:32 of the third, as Sproul found the range on a shot from high in the slot, assisted by Gabriel Fontaine and Vinni Lettieri.

The Sound Tigers restored the four-goal margin with 24.9 seconds left, with Toews firing a shot from the top of the right circle and beating Georgiev on the stick side.

“You have to make sure you’re sharp,” Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge said of his team. “Those opportunities are where you have to make sure you’re aware of what’s going on behind you.”

“Not every game is going to be a free-flowing game,” Whitney added. “But that just means to focus and stay in the game. We’ll learn from it tonight and recharge the batteries over break and be ready to go.”

The Wolf Pack are now off until this Friday night, December 29, when they will travel to Wilkes-Barre, PA to take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.  Faceoff is 7:05 PM and all of the action can be heard live on News Radio 1410 WPOP, and online at newsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio.  Video streaming is available at ahllive.com.

The next home game for the Wolf Pack is next Saturday, December 30, when they host the Springfield Thunderbirds in a 7:00 contest.  The first 2,000 fans into that game will take home a Wolf Pack player trading card set, presented by CM Concessions.

HARFF: (FRI) PACK PUSH PAST PROVIDENCE

      VERSUS

Hartford Wolf Pack 6, Providence Bruins 4

By Ben Harff, Hartford Wolf Pack

Hartford, CT, December 22, 2017 – The Hartford Wolf Pack erased a 3-2 deficit with four third-period goals Friday night at the XL Center, on their way to a 6-4 win over the first-place Providence Bruins.

The victory was the Wolf Pack’s fifth in their last six games, and they now have at least a standings point in nine straight (6-0-1-2).

Scott Kosmachuk, Eric Selleck, and Gabriel Fontaine all scored in the third period for Hartford, and Vinni Lettieri added an empty-net goal.

Peter Holland got the Wolf Pack off to a fast start, scoring on the game’s first shot only 47 seconds in.  The Bruins would get the next two, though, just 2:02 apart.

Justin Hickman tied the score with his first of two goals in the game at 12:50, and then Matt Beleskey connected on a shot from high in the slot at 14:52.

Ryan Graves got that one back, though, with 1:59 remaining in the period, sneaking a shot above the blocker of Bruin goaltender Zane McIntyre.   Anthony DeAngelo and Holland earned the assists.

The first goal in the second period came even faster than in the first frame. This time it was Providence scoring, just 19 seconds after the puck drop.  Kenny Agostino beat Wolf Pack goaltender Marek Mazanec’s blocker side to earn his eighth goal of the season. Assists were credited to Colton Hargrove and Austin Czarnik.

Despite the Wolf Pack outshooting Bruins 18-8 in the second, rest of the frame remained scoreless, before the third period brought more action.

At the 7:06 mark of the third period, the Wolf Pack tied the game again, this time on a power play goal. Kosmachuk buried home the rebound of Steven Fogarty’s shot.  Ryan Sproul also earned an assist on the play. After the game Kosmachuk said, “[Fogarty] made a great play off the rush and I got rewarded there by going to the net.”

Only 1:27 later, at 8:33, the Wolf Pack took their first lead since the first period. After a Bruin defender mishandled a bouncing puck in the neutral zone, Selleck scooped the puck up and beat McIntyre low to the stick side. The goal was Selleck’s first point of the season and came unassisted.

Hartford did not ease up, as they scored a shorthanded goal at the 14:06 mark. Dawson Leedahl forechecked hard and found Fontaine, wide open to McIntyre’s left. As he faced McIntyre on-on-one, Fontaine snuck his shot in just over the catching glove.

Providence pulled McIntyre for an extra attacker with over two minutes remaining, but Lettieri foiled that strategy with an empty-netter at the 18:49 mark. Fogarty earned the lone assist on the play.

With only 41.7 seconds remaining in the game, the Bruins scored one last goal to cap off the action. This was again off the stick of Hickman, with assists given to Emil Johansson and Jesse Gabrielle.

“I thought our third period was great,” said Holland after the game. “Obviously being behind 3-2 going into it isn’t the position you want to be in, but I thought our guys did a great job, and it’s nice to get that win.”
