THOMPSON RETURNS FOR SECOND SEASON IN GREENVILLE

BY: Mark Shelley, Greenville Swamp Rabbits

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits announced that veteran forward Garrett Thompson has re-signed with the team ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Entering his ninth professional season since signing an entry-level contract with the Ottawa Senators in 2014, Thompson returned to the Swamp Rabbits after a 42-point campaign in 2020-21.

“I’m very excited to return to Greenville,” said Thompson. “It was a really easy decision, and the city has a lot to offer. Both the team and organization have a competitive drive to be a contender, and I want to be a part of that.”

MORE ON THOMPSON

An experienced scorer, Thompson has built an impressive resume with 108 AHL appearances and 281 ECHL games. Thompson’s experience led him to a four-point postseason in last season run and will undoubtedly be relied on as Greenville eyes a return to the playoffs this season.

“Garrett is such a force for us on the ice through his size, physical play, and overall skill set,” said Swamp Rabbits Head Coach Andrew Lord. “He is a power forward who can play in all situations and can play all three forward positions. Thompson is a great person and teammate, and his leadership abilities are tremendous. He was another very important signing for us this off-season, and it’s great to get him confirmed this early.”

Greenville, SC – Greg Meireles scored twice, and Gordi Myer tallied his first professional goal to help Greenville to a 5-3 road win over the South Carolina Stingrays on Wednesday night.

Only 20 seconds into the contest, the Swamp Rabbits scored first courtesy of Gordi Myer’s first pro goal. Myer fired a wrist shot from the right point and beat Rays’ goaltender Alex Dubeau to provide Greenville a 1-0 lead.

The Stingrays responded at the 3:30 mark from Zach Malatesta’s fourth goal of the season. Malatesta corralled the puck and fired past Rabbits netminder John Lethemon.
Late in the second period, Swamp Rabbits defenseman Alec Rauhauser regained his club’s advantage at the 19:32 mark. Rauhauser received the puck at the left-point, danced through the Stingrays defense, and went forehand-backhand past Dubeau. Greenville carried a 2-1 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes.

THIRD PERIOD

In the third period, Greenville added an insurance marker courtesy of a Greg Meireles on the power play at 7:51. Meireles buried the rebound in the low slot of a Matt Bradley bid for his campaign’s eighth goal.

South Carolina answered with a power play goal of their own from Justin Florek at 10:09. Florek redirected a Cole Ully feed at the net-front past the glove of Lethemon to cut the score to 3-2.

The Swamp Rabbits regained their two-goal cushion with Max Zimmer scoring his 11th goal of the season at 14:47. Anthony Rinaldi created a footrace for Zimmer on a breakaway and beat Dubeau backhand-forehand.

Meireles hit twine for the second time at 16:55. Meireles cut into the zone 1-on-3 and beat Dubeau with a shot along his blocker side on a delayed penalty.

Jordan Klimek scored for South Carolina at 19:45 to round out the 5-3 final.

LAST TIME OUT

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits scored three times in the first period and downed the Jacksonville Icemen, 4-3, last Sunday at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. For special teams, it was a night to remember, Nick Poehling scored his fourth goal of the season on a shorthanded 2-on-1 rush at 4:10. Joey Haddad, Samuel Jardine, and Garrett Thompson scored on the power play to help their club to a 3-for-5 night on the man-advantage.

The South Carolina Stingrays were also 4-3 winners last Sunday over the Orlando Solar Bears at the North Charleston Coliseum. Andrew Cherniwchan, Justin Florek, Cole Ully, and Dan DeSalvo all scored for the Rays.

PURE POWER

Greenville’s three power play goals on Sunday tied a season-high for the third time this season. Previously, the Rabbits scored thrice on the man-advantage on Feb. 27 in a 6-4 win over Allen and Feb. 19 in a 4-3 victory at Indy. In their last three contests, Greenville’s man-advantage is 6-for-11 and scored on five consecutive power play chances between Saturday’s 2-for-2 performance and Sunday. In the season-series, the Rabbits are 7-for-38 (18.4%) while a man-up versus South Carolina.

THOMPSON’S WINNER

Bits veteran forward Garrett Thompson registered a key insurance marker at 13:20 of the third period, which later stood as the eventual game-winner on Sunday. Before Sunday’s game, Thompson’s last game-winner in the ECHL came on March 4, 2018, at Quad City.

The 31-year-old forward played overseas in 2018-19 and 2019-20 before rejoining the North American pro game this season. In 36 games with the Swamp Rabbits, Thompson has corralled 17 points (seven goals, ten assists). The Ferris State University product in total has recorded 265 points (103 goals, 162 assists) in 407 professional games.

A NEW HOME FOR STROME

On Tuesday, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits received forward Matthew Strome from the American Hockey League’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Strome is under an Entry-Level Contract with the Philadelphia Flyers after being selected in the 2017 NHL Draft. A Mississauga, Ontario native, Strome, joins the Upstate after appearing in three games with Lehigh Valley this season and scoring one goal.

In 2019-20, the 6-foot-4, 206-pound forward debuted in the ECHL and posted 20 points for Reading (nine goals, 11 assists) in 25 games. During his time with the Royals, Strome recorded an 11-game point streak and totaled 13 points (five goals, eight assists) from Feb. 1-Feb. 28, 2020. Before turning pro, Strome played four seasons with the OHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs and served as a captain in 2018-19. He helped the Bulldogs to the 2018 OHL Championship with 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) in 20 playoff games.

SEASON-SERIES RECAP

Tonight marks the ninth meeting between Greenville and South Carolina in the current season-series. The Rabbits hold a 5-1-0-2 mark versus their bitter in-state rival with six games requiring sudden-death overtime. Greenville is 4-0 against the Rays in 3-on-3 overtime but 0-2 when a shootout is needed.

The North Charleston Coliseum marks the scene where rookie goaltender John Lethemon made his professional debut and recorded his first pro win on Dec. 27, 2020. Lethemon stopped 30 of 32 shots and earned the victory with Ben Finkelstein’s overtime game-winner at 2:41 of sudden-death.

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits salvaged two out of three games on the weekend behind three power play goals to top the Jacksonville Icemen, 4-3, Sunday at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Greenville posted a crooked number in the first period behind a solid special team’s presence. Nick Poehling scored a shorthanded unassisted goal on a 2-on-1 rush at 4:10 to provide his club an early lead. The Rabbits went to their first power play chance at 9:01 after Craig Martin received a hooking infraction. On the man-advantage, Joey Haddad blasted a drive from the left circle at 10:07 to double his club’s lead.

Erik Bradford put Jacksonville on the board at 16:48, but only 29 seconds later, Greenville found an answer. After Bradford’s goal, Michael Kim was penalized for roughing to put the Rabbits on another power play. Once again, the Bits converted courtesy of Samuel Jardine’s second goal of the campaign at 17:17.

#RABBITSRISING#

Greenville’s 3-1 lead stood going into the third period when Abbott Girduckis brought the Icemen closer at 1:39. The Swamp Rabbits restored their two-goal advantage later in the frame by pushing across their third power play goal. Garrett Thompson won a race to a loose puck sitting in the blue paint and beat Icemen goaltender Charles Williams at 13:20.

Michael Kim scored his first goal of the season at 17:57 to again cut the Jacksonville deficit to one, but the Swamp Rabbits successfully closed out a 4-3 final on home ice.

Greenville finishes the weekend with four out of six points against the Icemen in a three-game set. Final shots totaled 27-24 in favor of Jacksonville. The Swamp Rabbits finished 3-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the kill in a solid special team’s performance.

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits open four games in five nights against the South Carolina Stingrays on Wednesday, March 31, at the North Charleston Coliseum. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits skated to a 5-4 overtime victory over the Jacksonville Icemen on Saturday night at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Patrick Bajkov scored twice, and Greg Meireles walked-off the contest with an overtime game-winner at 5:32 of sudden-death.

Bajkov opened the scoring with a power move to the net at the 7:00 mark in the first period. Bajkov raced towards the Icemen cage and beat Jacksonville goaltender Charles Williams low to the ice.

The Icemen answered courtesy of Brendan Miller at the 12:05 mark. Miller fired a slapper from inside the left circle and beat Rabbits goaltender John Lethemon to tie the game at 1-1.

A back-and-forth period continued with Liam Pecararo converting 14 seconds later unassisted at 12:19. Before the first frame expired, Jacksonville found the equalizer on Trevor Hamilton’s second goal of the campaign at 15:41.

#RABBITSRISING#

In the middle frame, Jacksonville tallied at 5:50 to grab their first and only lead of the night. Wacey Rabbit cleaned up a loose puck sitting in the low-slot to provide his club a 3-2 advantage.

At 10:03, Bajkov scored his second of the night and ninth of the campaign after burying a perfect cross-ice pass from David Broll. With the score even at 3-3 courtesy of Bajkov’s second, Garrett Thompson provided the Bits a late-period 4-3 edge. On the power play, after Jason Binkley was flagged for slashing at 17:09, Thompson redirected a Bajkov feed from the low-slot past, Williams, at 18:14.

Late in the third period, Jacksonville tied the contest for a third time on their own power play. Jake Elmer finished a net-mouth scramble and deposited a loose puck past Lethemon at 16:14.

In sudden-death overtime, the Swamp Rabbits were granted a four-minute man-advantage with 3:39 left. On a transition, Pecararo raced up the left-wing and fed across to an open Greg Meireles. For his seventh goal of the season, Meireles kicked the puck from skate to stick and converted the overtime winner at 5:32 of overtime.

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits and Jacksonville Icemen will conclude a three-game set tomorrow afternoon, March 28, at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. Ticket information is available online at swamprabbits.com.

LAST TIME OUT

Last night, Jacksonville earned a 3-1 victory over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena to open a three-game weekend set. Erik Bradford tallied his third goal of the season at 12:45 of the first period to provide the Icemen a 1-0 advantage. Jacksonville doubled their advantage to 2-0 at 10:08 of the third period on Brandon Gignac’s eventual game-winner. Matt Bradley scored on the power play for the Bits at 14:33 to pull his club within one, but Gignac potted the empty-net goal at 19:43 to conclude a 3-1 final. In the head-to-head season series, the Swamp Rabbits are 5-2-2-0 versus the Icemen this season.

WHEN SCORING FIRST

In eight of the nine meetings this season between Greenville and Jacksonville, the team who scored first eventually won the hockey game. Through 34 games this season for the Icemen, Jacksonville has opened the game’s scoring on 18 occasions. When doing so, the Icemen’s record stands at 11-3-2-2. On the flip side, the Swamp Rabbits have scored the game’s first goal 15 times in 38 games this season. Greenville’s record is 11-0-4-0 when scoring first and are one of two teams in the ECHL still unbeaten in 60 minutes when opening the scoring.

BRADLEY EYES A MILESTONE

After recording a goal in last night’s contest, Rabbits forward Matt Bradley is one point shy of the 100 plateaux in his professional career. Bradley enters tonight with 99 points (36 goals, 63 assists) in 160 professional games in his third pro season. Following a major junior career that started with the Medicine Hat Tigers and concluded in Regina, Bradley turned pro and debuted with the Newfoundland Growlers in 2018-19. A 2019 Kelly Cup Champion, the Vancouver, British Columbia native made his American Hockey League debut and skated in two games with the Toronto Marlies last season. In 35 contests this season with the Bits, Bradley sports 20 points (11 goals, nine assists).

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits opened a three-game set against the Jacksonville Icemen with a 3-1 defeat at the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena. Jacksonville earned two points behind Icemen forward Brandon Gignac’s two-goal evening. Matt Bradley scored his 11th goal of the season in the third period for the Rabbits.

In the first period, the Icemen grabbed a 1-0 advantage courtesy of Erik Bradford at the 12:45 mark. Bradford corralled a drop-pass at the left circle from Ara Nazarian and fired a wrister past the glove hand of Greenville netminder John Lethemon. Shots after the opening period were 12-11 in favor of Jacksonville.

After a scoreless middle frame, the Icemen doubled their lead with Gignac’s first of two goals and the eventual game-winner at 10:08. Gignac received a pass from the left-wing in his wheelhouse from Pascal Aquin and fired it past Lethemon.

With the Greenville net empty, Gignac notched his second goal of the evening to propel the Icemen past the Swamp Rabbits by a 3-1 margin.
