GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits announced today that third-year forward Kamerin Nault has re-signed with the team for the 2020-21 ECHL Season.

Nault returns to Greenville for a third season in the Upstate. The 6’2”, 194-pound forward achieved a breakout season with 16 goals and 32 points in 40 games last season. Additionally, he played one game with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers.

“I’m excited to get back to playing hockey, especially getting to do so in front of the fans in Greenville,” Nault said of his re-signing.

“Kamerin is a dynamic forward who plays with pace and intensity throughout his game,” said Swamp Rabbits Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Andrew Lord. “Nault is great on the forecheck and battles hard all over the ice. His compete level is also an exciting component for us.  He has produced consistently over the last two years for Greenville and we are excited to have him back.”

A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Nault has played in 60 games for the Swamp Rabbits over the last two seasons, earning a near point-per-game average with 28 goals, 25 assists, and 53 points. He turned professional with Greenville during the 2018-19 campaign following three seasons of Canadian college hockey with the University of Manitoba in USports. With the Bisons, he registered 16 goals and 26 points in 46 games. Prior to his collegiate career, Nault played four seasons in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League with his hometown Winnipeg Blues, averaging nearly a point-per-game with 203 points (98g-105ast) in 208 games. GREENVILLE, S.C. — Swamp Rabbits forward Kamerin Nault has signed a Professional Tryout contract (PTO) with the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes, and will join their active roster immediately. Nault, 24, ranks seventh in team scoring with 34 points.

The Winnipegger was one of the top rookies in the league out of the University of Manitoba last season and has not stopped in his second season in Greenville out of the University of Manitoba. In 60 games in the ECHL, he has scored 53 points, with 28 goals, good for a .883 points-per-game mark.

He enters his time in Charlotte with points in 12 of his last 16 games (7 goals, 7 assists). He owns a well-above-average shooting percentage of 15.4% in his ECHL career.

Nault has one game of AHL experience with the Manitoba Moose to end last season. He scored a goal and an assist in his American Hockey League debut against the Chicago Wolves on April 14, 2019.

Nault had a strong junior career with his hometown Winnipeg Blues, where he scored over 30 goals in a season twice and claimed the MJHL championship in 2014.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits added intensity, toughness and offensive ability with the signing of forward, Shaquille Merasty to a Standard Player Contract for the 2019–20 season. Merasty, entering his third pro season, put up a career year in his second season, split between Rapid City and Orlando, and has momentum entering the year in the Upstate.

Merasty, a large human at 6’5″ and 220 pounds, put up 10 goals and 15 assists to go along with 184 penalty minutes in 58 games of action last season. It extended far beyond his prior performance, with five goals and seven assists in 28 games the year prior.

The Manitoba native has not been afraid to get his hands dirty. In 86 pro games, Merasty has totaled 224 penalty minutes. He has played for the Rapid City Rush, the Orlando Solar Bears, and the Wichita Thunder.

His mix of toughness and skill was put on display throughout his career, dating back through his time in the Canadian college circuit with the University of Manitoba, Division III Adrian College, and with the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Portage Terriers.

Merasty drove the offensive bus and set the tone with the Terriers by winning two MJHL championships in his three seasons there. He put up back-to-back dominant playoff runs and was an almost point-per-game player in the regular season during his junior career.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Forward Zach Franko returns to the fold in 2019–20, as he has agreed to terms and has signed a Standard Player Contract. The late-season acquisition adds on to the existing returning core for next season.

Franko was acquired from the Idaho Steelheads along with defenseman Clint Lewis in exchange for the forward, Will Merchant on March 5, 2019. He entered the ECHL after a strong season with the University of Manitoba, alongside top scorer and current teammate Kamerin Nault.

While it was a bit of a slow start for Franko offensively in Idaho, his numbers blossomed in Greenville under head coach Kevin Kerr. He notched 8 points in 12 games, including points in four of his last five games to end the season. His best performance came on Fan Appreciation Night, where he scored two goals and an assist vs. Orlando on March 29.

Franko spent four years in the Canadian college circuit between the University of Manitoba and Acadia University, and prior to that, played for the Kootenay Ice and the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. His first season at Acadia saw him garner All-Rookie Team honors with a 30-point season.

The 26-year-old Winnipegger brings 331 games of junior hockey experience and 105 games of Canadian college hockey experience to the table after taking the slow and steady route to the pro ranks.

The following players are now under contract for the 2019–20 season:

Forward looks to perform compelling encore after an incredible rookie year

BY: Jordan Kuhns, Greenville Swamp Rabbits

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Arguably, no rookie was as productive as forward Kamerin Nault in 2019. The Winnipeg native has agreed to terms on a Standard Player Contract for the 2019–20 season.

The Winnipeg native finished his career at the University of Manitoba after three seasons and never looked back. He posted 21 points in his first 20 pro games—12 of them were goals. He shot a blisteringly high 19.6% on the year, which led the team.

His incredible accomplishments, including a hat trick, seven multi-point games, and four multi-goal games, netted him a professional tryout with his hometown club, the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. In just one game with the team, he notched a multi-point game, including his first AHL goal, on April 9.

Nault, just 23 years of age, made many a dazzling play. One of them found the top spot on ESPN’s SportsCenter after a deke, followed by a spin-o-rama assist on a tap-in goal by Michael Pelech against the Norfolk Admirals in April.

Even after missing a month due to an injury, Nault could not be cooled off. He scored his first career hat trick against the Kansas City Mavericks, which included the insurance goal in a 5-3 win on March 21.

Nault did most of his damage at even strength. 10 of his 12 goals were at 5-on-5. He showed discipline throughout his 20-game tenure by only committing four minor penalties.

The following players are now under contract for the 2019–20 season:

F – Michael Pelech (29)
F – Johno May (25)
F – Travis Howe (25)
F – Kamerin Nault (23)
D – J.C. Brassard (23)
D – Luke Ripley (25)

More signings will take place throughout the offseason, so stay tuned to the Swamp Rabbits on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Swamp Rabbits’ productive rookie gets first AHL shot

BY: Jordan Kuhns, Greenville Swamp Rabbits

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Greenville Swamp Rabbits forward Kamerin Nault has signed a professional tryout agreement (PTO) with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL and has been called up to the club effective immediately.

Nault started his pro career on a tear. He posted 21 points in his first 20 pro games (12 goals, 9 assists) after ending his college career at the University of Manitoba. He notched points in 13 of his 20 games and had seven multi-point efforts as one of the most productive rookies in the ECHL.

He showed a penchant for scoring at even strength, with 10 of his 12 goals as a pro in that situation. On top of that, he showed a penchant for scoring overall, with a 19.6% shooting percentage on the season.

He scored his first ECHL goal in his fourth game, a two-goal game, against the Orlando Solar Bears on February 1. His highest output was in a return from injury on March 21 against the Kansas City Mavericks, where he scored his first career hat trick.

“Going home,” in essence, the 23-year-old Nault had spent his entire hockey career in his home province of Manitoba before heading stateside on January 24. Prior to joining Greenville, he was a standout player for the Winnipeg Blues of the MJHL, winning the championship in 2014, and earning Second Team All-Star honors in 2016.

The Moose are the AHL affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets, and through 73 of the 76 games of the season, have a 37-29-7 record. They are locked in a fight for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Central Division.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits have acquired forward Zach Franko and defenseman Clint Lewis from the Idaho Steelheads in exchange for forward Will Merchant, according to head coach and director of hockey operations Kevin Kerr.

Franko, 25, signed on with the Steelheads out of the University of Manitoba on February 13 and was a teammate of forward Kamerin Nault‘s with the Bisons. In nine games in Idaho, Franko has scored a goal and two assists. Prior to his time in the Canadian college circuit, Franko was a productive player for the Kelowna Rockets and Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League, having posted 220 points in 280 games.

Lewis, 24, is a product of a prestigious prep school at Shattuck St. Mary’s, and the U.S. National Team Development Program. The 6’2″ blueliner won a Clark Cup championship with the Sioux Falls Stampede in 2015 and went on to a three-year career at Minnesota State-Mankato. Lewis led the Mavericks with a +19 mark in his senior season, which was also good for 12th in the NCAA.

Merchant departs the Swamp Rabbits and returns to the team that he started his ECHL career with. In 57 games with Greenville, Merchant posted another double-digit goal season (10) and posted 22 points overall. In 196 games in his three-year career, Merchant has scored 116 points. Prior to the season, he was invited to the Chicago Wolves’ AHL training camp.

The Swamp Rabbits are back in action on Friday, March 8 in Jacksonville at 7:30 p.m.

Swamp Rabbits return to winning ways

BY: Jordan Kuhns, Greenville Swamp Rabbits

GREENVILLE, SC – This week, the 11-game losing streak is over, and with it, a resurgence. The Greenville Swamp Rabbits picked up wins in three of four games over the past week. In need of a surge for the final 20 games to get to the fourth and final playoff spot, of which they trail by 13 points, step one of the foundation was accomplished by turning their fortunes around, taking leads, and scoring goals, which had been a challenge prior.

The Swamp Rabbits took on the hottest team in the ECHL, the Atlanta Gladiators, on Monday night, in need of a win to snap the streak. Greenville jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period but saw the Gladiators find a way to turn the tables and lead 3-2 early in the third period. Jake Bolton‘s goal tied the game, and newcomer Kamerin Nault continued his hot streak with the game-winning goal at the 2:36 mark of the extra session to snap the streak.

The Swamp Rabbits found themselves in a similar position on Friday night in Worcester, which started a three-game swing against the North Division. Luke Ripley scored his second goal in as many games, and Dylan Vander Esch added one more to give Greenville a 2-0 lead through two periods of play. Unforced errors and penalty trouble put the Swamp Rabbits in a bind, and Worcester’s normally silent power play rose to the occasion, scoring three times in the third period, and giving the Railers a come-from-behind victory.

From there, the Swamp Rabbits’ frustration was taken out on opposing goalies. In the first-ever matchup of the Swamp Rabbits and the Maine Mariners, Greenville came out firing. Led by forward Chris Izmirlian, the Swamp Rabbits scored the game’s first four goals. Izmirlian potted four goals on the night and the team notched six goals in the second period alone on 19 shots on goal. Johno May and Will Merchant ended goal droughts in big ways. Maine was forced to use both goaltenders, and neither could stop the bleeding. At the other end, Greenville goaltender Garrett Bartus held the fort with 29 saves on the night and a key win for the good guys.

The good feelings transferred into Sunday afternoon’s tussle with the Manchester Monarchs, though it did not look like it would be that way early. Manchester and Greenville combined for five first period goals, and the Monarchs held a 3-2 lead after the first. Once again, led by Izmirlian’s incredible week, and four points, the Swamp Rabbits scored the game’s final five goals, including a pair from both Austen Brassard and Nault, en route to the 7-3 win.

Riding a high, the Swamp Rabbits will have a relatively light schedule over the next week, until it ramps into overdrive to end February and begin March.

2/4 vs. Atlanta Gladiators – W 4-3
2/8 @ Worcester Railers – L 3-2
2/9 @ Maine Mariners – W 8-2
2/10 @ Manchester Monarchs – W 7-3

FAMILY DENTAL HEALTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chris Izmirlian – 3 GP | 5 G – 3 A – 8 P
No one in the ECHL was as prolific as Chris Izmirlian over the past week. He scored four goals, including the game-winner over the Maine Mariners on Saturday night, and on Sunday afternoon, picked up right where he left off with a goal and three helpers. All of this offensive productivity came after missing a month with an upper-body injury, and in need of zero time to reacclimate to the system or the pace of play. He was also a stalwart defensively, finishing the week as a +6.

RABBIT TAILS

  • The road was a sore spot for the Swamp Rabbits to begin the year. It took until November 10 to get their first road win of the year. Now the Swamp Rabbits have more road wins (9) than home wins (8) on the year.
  • Kamerin Nault‘s Swamp Rabbits career is one worth investigating at the end of the season. Nault has points in six of the nine games that he has played in, and has three multi-point efforts already. Nault had five points in nine games as a member of the University of Manitoba prior.
  • The Swamp Rabbits added forward Brian Morgan off of the waiver wire from the Florida Everblades on Saturday afternoon. Morgan is playing with his fourth team this season and has 21 points in 56 games prior. He scored two goals against the Swamp Rabbits this season—the only two goals he has on the year.
  • Scoring the first goal has been crucial to success. The Swamp Rabbits have a .619 points percentage when getting the game’s first goal (11-6-4).

UPCOMING GAMES

Swamp Rabbits begin road swing after Monday tussle

BY: Jordan Kuhns, Greenville Swamp Rabbits

GREENVILLE, SC – This week, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits appear to have run into a moment in time where everyone in their division is playing at the top of their game, and that every goalie is standing on his head against them. That fact was no more prevalent than this past week, where goalies posted a .965 save percentage against them, and continued to frustrate what has been an offense that has gone icy cold.

The week began with a mid-week tussle in Atlanta, and goaltender Sean Bonar did what he does lately—absolutely shut the door. The Gladiators have been on a recent tear, and it showed, as they picked up the 3-0 win by dominating possession (outshot 43-20), and dominating special teams (3-for-5 power play). The Swamp Rabbits could only muster single-digit shots on goal while allowing Atlanta to run rampant.

The Swamp Rabbits had to battle from two goals down against the Orlando Solar Bears on Friday and showed serious signs of life late. Kamerin Nault, the newcomer from the University of Manitoba, scored late in the second period to get the game within one, and tied the game at two, both by going to the net and finding a way. However, Orlando scored with just over a minute left to break Greenville’s heart, and suffer another loss.

The league’s best team came into town the following night, and they were looking for the series sweep. They got it. The Florida Everblades are the best team in just about every statistical category on the season, and it showed. Florida raced out to a 4-0 lead halfway through regulation and sat back defensively. Nault scored again for Greenville and snapped a power play scoreless streak that dated back to late December, but otherwise, it was the ‘Blades who swept the 10-game season series.

1/30 @ Atlanta Gladiators – L 4-0
2/1 vs. Orlando Solar Bears – L 4-2
2/2 vs. Florida Everblades – L 4-1

FAMILY DENTAL HEALTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kamerin Nault – 3 GP | 3 G – 0 A – 3 P
A developing power forward that is strong, has great hands, and a nose for the net was far and above the best Greenville Swamp Rabbits player on the ice over the past week. Kamerin Nault scored all three goals over the past week and showed flashes of complete dominance on the ice. Since joining the club for his debut on January 25, he has scored 4 points in 5 games, making him an intriguing piece of the puzzle moving forward.

RABBIT TAILS

  • The key to breaking the losing streak for Greenville starts and ends with getting the power play up and running again. The confidence on the man advantage showed signs of life and posted a power play tally on Saturday night against Florida. Will that trend continue tonight against Atlanta?
  • There are teams, like tonight’s opponent, who have not even seen a team outside of their division yet. Greenville will see the North Division this week, with games against Worcester, Maine, and Manchester in back-to-back-to-back days. The Swamp Rabbits split with Worcester in the only two games they saw against a North Division foe.
  • Even in the midst of this losing streak, analytically speaking, the Swamp Rabbits are in a better position now than ever. Once last in shots for, Greenville has averaged three more shots on goal in regulation on average than before the losing streak and has improved its defense by allowing, on average, one shot fewer.
  • After tonight’s game, the Swamp Rabbits will end a season-long homestand and take to the road. Seven of the next eight games will be on the road, and four of those eight games will be against the North Division, with one home date against the Newfoundland Growlers tossed in there.

BOXSCORE

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits went up against the league’s best, and could not keep up with the best offense in the league. Florida raced out to a 4-0 lead and held on to the Swamp Rabbits’ third-period push and won 4-1 over Greenville on Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

The Swamp Rabbits were gifted a five-minute major power play in the first 32 seconds of the game. However, it was the Everblades that took advantage of a disadvantage. Kyle Platzer sprung Joe Cox on a breakaway, and his triple deke opened the scoring at 4:53.

Former Swamp Rabbit Tommy Thompson converted late in the period on a tic-tac-toe passing play to double the lead.

Florida would strike twice more in the second period, with goals from John McCarron on the power play at the net mouth, and Matt Finn on a picture-perfect snapshot from the left wing side.

Kamerin Nault continued his scorching hot ways for the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, having scored his third goal in two nights. Nault has four points in five games since joining the club from the University of Manitoba. After coming out of the corner, Nault was fearless driving to the goal and converted on his own rebound to cut Florida’s lead to three.

The ‘Blades hung on to the lead for the rest of the way to sweep the season series.

The Swamp Rabbits close out the season-long homestand on Monday, February 4 against the Atlanta Gladiators. Tickets are available at SwampRabbits.com.
