SEASON NOTES
The Swamp Rabbits promoted nine different players to the AHL this season equaling 13 individual player call-ups. Caleb Herbert became Greenville’s leading man with appearances on three different AHL rosters. Rookie Dawson Leedahl saw the most action at the next level this season, logging 38 games at the ‘AAA’ level. In the AHL, Greenville alums accounted for 124 games and 25 points (7G, 18A) across four teams (Hartford, Charlotte, San Jose, and Utica).

The team had one of the best starts offensively of any ECHL team in recent memory. By the middle of December, the top three scorers in the league were on Greenville’s roster. Caleb Herbert, Allan McPherson, and Branden Troock were the first three players in the ECHL to breach the 30-point level. Herbert became the fastest Greenville skater to achieve 30 points in franchise history, reaching the mark in his first 19 games. It was the first time since 2012 that an ECHL player entered December with 30 points as Chad Costello (39), Jack Combs (34), and Michael Forney (30) each hit 30 points while playing for the Colorado Eagles.

BREAKING GROUND

  • Most Power Play Goals in a Game: 3 (11/15/17 vs. ATL)

The Swamp Rabbits broke some standing records this season. Some of the records that fell were the club’s longest winning streak and the individual record for longest point streak in team history. Caleb Herbert’s 17-game streak broke Brendan Connolly’s 14-game streak that’s been the franchise record since the 2011-12 season. Joe Houk also became the club’s leading point-getter from the blue line, surpassing Wes Cunningham who achieved 73 points (9G, 64A) in 125 games.

DEBUTS
The Swamp Rabbits roster was a mix of many different rookies throughout the season which led to a plethora of professional and ECHL debuts this season. A total of 14 different players made their debut in pro hockey this season and an additional seven players appeared in the ECHL for the first time in their careers. Players who made their pro debut this season accounted for 73 points (28G, 45A) on the Swamp Rabbits roster. Those players making their ECHL debuts accounted for an additional 21 points (9G, 12A).

Pro Debut: Timmy Moore, Johno May, JT Henke, Spencer Dorowicz, Ryan Ferrill, Dawson Leedahl, Guillaume Naud, Robert Powers, Sergey Zborovskiy, Riley Sweeney, Brock Beukeboom, Carter Struthers, Brenden Kotyk, and Braeden Ostepchuk.

ANOTHER LEVEL
Goaltender Brandon Halverson became the eighth Swamp Rabbits alum to make his NHL debut when he entered the New York Rangers game on Feb. 17, 2018. The netminder joins Cam Talbot, Mackenzie Skapski, Nathan Lieuwen, Connor Knapp, Julien Brouillette, Marc-Andre Bourdon, and Shane Harper as the only Greenville alumni to make their NHL debut since the team formed in 2010.

ROOKIE FOR THE AGES
Forward Evan Jasper produced 50 points in his first full season, becoming just the third player in franchise history to reach the mark as a rookie. Ahti Oksanen tallied 52 points last season while Marc-Olivier Vallerand set the pace in the inaugural season of 2010-11 with 53 points. Jasper ended the season by making his AHL debut with the Hartford Wolf Pack but was still ninth among all ECHL rookies this season in scoring.

ECHL HONORS
Caleb Herbert

  • Player of the Week (Nov. 13-19)
  • Player of the Month (November)
  • ECHL Plus Performer (November)

Forward Caleb Herbert was the most dominant player for the Swamp Rabbits this season and caught the eyes of the league. During a historic month of November, the Bloomington, Minnesota native outscored all other ECHL skaters, notching 23 points (11G, 12A) in 13 games. Only teammates Allan McPherson and Josh Winquist came close to his production, earning 18 points each. Herbert earned a plus-12 rating in the month to go along with his scoring success. His best week came in the middle of the month, collecting nine points (5G, 4A) in four games. Each of his accolades helped push Greenville to a second-place ranking in the Eastern Conference at the end of the month.

The Greenville Road Warriors announced today that defenseman Wes Cunningham has been returned to the team by the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. Also, defenseman Benn Olson has been recalled from his loan to Greenville by Bridgeport, and the Road Warriors have signed forward Tim Coffman to an amateur tryout.

Cunningham returns to Greenville after making his second trip to Bridgeport this season. He played three games with the Sound Tigers from February 18 to February 20 and earned a +1 rating with six shots on goal and two penalty minutes. The fourth-year pro has played five total games with Bridgeport this season and is a -1 with two penalty minutes.

Cunningham is the top-scoring defenseman for the Road Warriors this season with 22 points (2G, 20A) through 38 games. Last season, he tied for the league lead among defensemen with 36 assists and was named to the All-ECHL First Team.

Coffman, 24, joins the Road Warriors after completing his four-year career at NCAA D-III Utica College. He ended his senior season with 33 points (11G, 22A) to finish second on the Pioneers in scoring. He was the team’s leading scorer each of the three previous seasons and compiled 139 points (58G, 81A) over 98 games. Coffman is listed as a 5-11, 180 pound forward.

Olson was recalled by Bridgeport without having played a game with the Road Warriors. The 6-4, 215 pound defenseman was loaned to Greenville by the Sound Tigers on February 22, but had to serve one remaining game on a suspension incurred while playing for the ECHL’s Alaska Aces. He sat out Greenville’s game that night against the Elmira Jackals and is now eligible to play in the ECHL again.

Cunningham and Coffman are expected to be available to play when the Road Warriors take on the Trenton Titans at Sun National Bank Center tonight.

Mark your calendars! The Road Warriors return home on Friday, March 2, 2012 to take on the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:35. Join the Road Warriors for their second-annual Pink in the Rink presented by Greenville Hospital System to benefit the Mary Kay Foundation. Tonight the Greenville Road Warriors wrap up a stretch of 13 consecutive games against South Division foes by visiting the Low-Country to take on the South Carolina Stingrays.

Fans can follow the action by watching live on America One or listening at  Greenvilleroadwarriors.com. The Road Warriors are 6-2-0 this season against the Stingrays and 15-10-0 overall in their history against South Carolina. Tonight is the only time the Road Warriors and Stingrays will meet in the month of February before squaring off seven times, out of Greenville’s 14 games, in March. Greenville has won one of the previous three meetings in North Charleston, but in each of the two losses has been limited to one goal. The Stingrays’ 50 goals allowed at home are the fewest in the Eastern Conference and third fewest in the league. Greenville’s 74 road goals, meanwhile, are second most in the Eastern Conference and seventh most in the league.

Who: Greenville Road Warriors at South Carolina Stingrays
What: Away Game #25, Season Game #47
When: 7:05 p.m.
Where: North Charleston Coliseum, 5001 Coliseum Dr., North Charleston, SC 29418

Jeff Caister logged his 100th ECHL game last Friday in Gwinnett. 12 of those games were played with the Stingrays.

Greenville’s 145 goals scored are fourth most in the Eastern Conference. The Road Warriors have been limited to six goals in their three prior games at South Carolina.

Greenville has given up two power play goals in each of its last two games. It’s the second time that has happened this season and first since Oct. 28 and 29 vs. Florida (both wins).

Greenville was 3-for-6 on the power play against South Carolina on Nov. 10 (first meeting of season). Since then the Road Warriors are 0-for-17 on the PP against the ‘Rays.

Greenville Road Warriors     VERSUS          Florida Everblades

BY: Ray Schmitt, Voice of the Greenville Road Warriors

The Greenville Road Warriors erased a three-goal third period deficit to claim a 4-3 shootout victory over the Florida Everblades at Germain Arena on Thursday night. The win improved Greenville to 25-16-2 on the season.

Click here for tonight’s box score.

In the opening frame the Road Warriors generated a number of good scoring chances and out-shot Florida 12-8 but was unable to find the back of the net. Brandon Wong hit the pipe with a deflection of Wes Cunningham‘s point shot, but it hit the post and bounced through the crease behind goalie Pat Nagle. A bit later, Brett Robinson swatted a loose puck on the right side of the net out of mid-air and right across the open goal mouth. That shot could have tied the game because Florida grabbed the 1-0 lead on a 2-on-1 goal by Brayden Irwin. Jason Missiaen made seven stops in the period for the Road Warriors.

The second period belonged to the Everblades, as well, as they took advantage of a pair of Greenville turnovers to widen their lead to three. The first came at 14:10 when Deron Cousens sprung Scott Pitt on a breakaway after stealing a Greenville head-man pass. Pitt’s wrist shot snuck past Missiaen on the blocker side to double Florida’s lead. The Everblades’ second of the frame came with 14 seconds left on the clock after a breakout pass missed Jeremy Gouchie in the middle of the zone. Matt Beca took a pass low on the left wing and one-timed it past Missiaen. Greenville managed 10 shots in the period, but none got behind Nagle.

The Road Warriors only won one of the three periods in regulation, but they won the third period in a big way and gave themselves a chance to pick up the win. The comeback began in earnest when Marc-Olivier Vallerand scored a power play goal at 4:22. Justin Bowers continued his torrid month with his 23rd point in January with the lone assist. Bowers then set up Brett Robinson’s 15th of the campaign at 11:07 as the Road Warriors drew within one. They never let up the pressure, but time started to work against them late in the frame. So with just over a minute to go Missiaen was pulled for the extra attacker and it was Vallerand who found the back of the net for the tying goal with 38 seconds to play. That goal forced overtime, but the Road Warriors were far from out of the woods.

At the end of regulation Greenville was whistled for a too many men on the ice minor and began overtime shorthanded. They were able to kill off the ‘Blades power play but once back at 4-on-4 they couldn’t find the winning goal despite a handful of shots. It took a shootout to decide the winner and the Road Warriors had a brick wall on their side. Missiaen stopped all four Florida shooters while Brandon Wong and Vallerand notched goals for Greenville to win the breakaway contest.

Missiaen stopped 26 shots in his eighth win of the season. Greenville was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill and 1-for-3 on the power play.

Greenville Road Warriors VERSUS      Reading Royals

BY: Ray Schmitt, Voice of the Greenville Road Warriors

GREENVILLE, SC Brendan Connolly’s hat trick didn’t provide quite enough offense as the Greenville Road Warriors fell 6-4 to the Reading Royals at the BI-LO Center Friday night. The loss dropped Greenville’s record to 15-9-2 on the season.

Click here for tonight’s box score.

Reading’s power play was operating at peak efficiency in the first period as it went 2-for-2 as part of a four-goal frame. The Road Warriors managed to cut Reading’s lead to one after the Royals went up 2-0 on goals 1:14 apart by Derrick LaPoint and Olivier Labelle. Brendan Connolly used his speed to rush coast-to-coast and rip a wrist shot past Reading goalie Mark Owuya at 8:07. Labelle’s goal came on Reading’s first power play and a one-timer by Rob Kwiet at 11:59 restored the Royals’ two-goal lead. Ray Macias finished off an odd-man rush a few minutes later to give Reading a three score advantage. Jason Missiaen faced 14 shots in the frame and stopped 10 of them.

The Road Warriors slowed Reading’s attack in the second period and prevented the deficit from growing any further. Greenville limited the Royals to nine shots in the frame and Missiaen was there to turn each of them away. Late in the second, the Road Warriors’ power play woke up and cashed in for the first time in four games. Connolly netted his second of the night with Rob Shearer serving a holding minor. Kale Kerbashian and Wes Cunningham teamed up to set up Connolly as the Road Warriors closed within two.

Greenville came roaring out of the gate in the third period and scored twice before the period was six minutes old to tie the game. At 2:21 Connolly capped off the second hat trick in Road Warriors history with a snap shot from the right wing. Justin Bowers’ fourth of the season came on the power play at 5:58 and tied the game for Greenville. But Reading received a 5-on-3 power play a few minutes later and Kwiet hammered home a one-timer to put Reading back ahead by one with just over 10 minutes to play. Labelle provided an insurance score with 7:20 left to play and his second goal of the night set the final score.

Missiaen was saddled with the loss as he made 24 saves for the Road Warriors. Greenville was 2-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Road Warriors return home to face the South Carolina Stingrays on Tuesday, December 27 at 7:35 p.m. at the BI-LO Center. It was released yesterday that Sut Bickel was called up to the New York Rangers due to the hits to the team’s defensive corps. Now comes word out of the Ranger’s beat reporters that Tim Erixon is ALSO heading up to New York.  Add in the unknown status at this point of Wade Redden, who left Saturday night’s game after crashing into the net with Chad Johnson and Blake Parlett and there is a REAL need for help on the blueline in the Connecticut capitol.

The Whale recalled Lee Baldwin from Greenville today; that takes care of one,  but it’s a safe bet that someone else will be heading up north from Greenville as well at least on a temporary basis. The two most likely to come would be Wes Cunningham, who just played for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on a call-up or perhaps Jyri Niemi.

Connecticut WhaleJEFF PROUGH AND WES CUNNINGHAM PROMOTED TO AHL

The Greenville Road Warriors announced today that forward Jeff Prough and defenseman Wes Cunningham have been promoted to the American Hockey League.

Prough, 25, is making his third career trip to the AHL. Under contract to the Road Warriors’ affiliate, the Connecticut Whale, he was recalled from his loan to Greenville by the Whale. Prough ranks second on the Road Warriors in goals (12), assists (13) and points (25), and is tied for the league lead with seven power play goals. He is the reigning ECHL Player of the Month after posting 16 points (7G, 9A) in 11 games in November.

Prough has 24 games of AHL experience with the Lowell and Albany Devils. In that time he has produced two goals, six assists, and a +3 rating.

GREENVILLE, SC – The Greenville Road Warriors came from behind for a 2-1 shootout win over the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday night at the BI-LO Center. The win improved Greenville’s record to 6-5-0 on the season.

Click here for tonight’s box score.

The first period was the goalies’ time to shine as Nic Riopel and Philipp Grubauer combined for 16 saves and did not allow for a goal in the frame. Riopel made the best save of the period when he gloved a shot by South Carolina‘s Paul Baier from the left wing near the midway point of the period. Greenville’s best chance came a few minutes later in a 3-on-1 rush but Justin Bowers’ shot from the left wing whistled just out of the reach of Grubauer.

Greenville was able to generate the majority of scoring chances in the second period, but it was a power play goal by South Carolina’s Greg Stewart that broke the scoreless tie. The Stingrays had their best chance of the night to cash in when Stewart was awarded a penalty shot at 14:29. He tried to slip a shot past Riopel low to the blocker side, but the Road Warriors’ goaltender deflected it away. Brandon Wong twice hit the post high to the glove side on Grubauer, but could not convert. With the Stingrays on the power play, Stewart beat Riopel to the blocker side with a shot from the point at 18:11, and South Carolina took that lead into the break.

The third period was a battle of wills between the Road Warriors offense which was battling for the tying goal, and South Carolina’s smothering defense. The Stingrays were relentless and held the Road Warriors without an official shot on goal until the third was 19 minutes old. But in that final minute, with Riopel pulled for the extra attacker, Marc-Olivier Vallerand shuffled a backhanded shot through traffic and past a screened Grubauer. The goal was Vallerand’s fifth of the season with assists going to Connor Shields and Wes Cunningham. With 24 seconds left in the game, South Carolina’s Sean Dolan took a delay of game minor that left Greenville on the power play to begin the overtime frame.

Despite the four-on-three advantage, the Road Warriors couldn’t cash in and had to wait until the shootout to try to claim victory. Grubauer proved tough to beat there too as he denied each of the first three Road Warriors’ shooters. Riopel matched him save-for-save, though, and Justin Bowers finally broke through in the top of the fourth. South Carolina’s Nick Tabisz match the effort to send the shootout to sudden death, but the Road Warriors persevered. Connor Shields and Brett Robinson beat Grubauer while Riopel allowed a goal to Pierre-Luc O’Brien, but stopped Jerry Pollastrone to earn the win.

Riopel stopped 35 shots for his sixth win of the season. Greenville was 0-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Greenville Road Warriors     VERSUS     Florida Everblades

GREENVILLE, SC The Greenville Road Warriors scored five times despite being limited to 22 shots and won 5-3 over the Florida Everblades on Saturday afternoon at the BI-LO Center. The win was Greenville’s third straight and improved it’s record to 3-3-0.

Click here for today’s box score.

In the first period it was the visiting Everblades that fired the opening salvo and left the Road Warriors playing catch up. Brendan Connolly was whistled for a double minor for roughing, and a 10-minute misconduct after a dust up with Mike McKenzie and Greenville was left shorthanded. David Rutherford capitalized for Florida with a shot that beat Nic Riopel from the right wing. After Greenville couldn’t cash in on its first power play of the night, Scott Pitt caused a turnover in the Greenville end that led to Philip-Michael Devos’ goal at 17:10 that put the Everblades up a pair heading into the second period.

Rookie forward Jeremy Gouchie put on a show in the second period as he scored two goals and set up another as Greenville battled back to tie the game. Gouchie’s first two professional goals were scored 2:31 apart early in the second and allowed Greenville to wipe out Florida’s 2-0 advantage. Brett Robinson followed up his two-goal game from Friday night by assisting on each of Gouchie’s scores. Florida came back to take a 3-2 lead thanks to a power play goal by Scott Pitt at 9:16. That lead didn’t last long, though, because Cullen Eddy’s second goal of the season pulled the Road Warriors even at 12:58. Gouchie and Wes Cunningham set up the score. Riopel made a couple of spectacular saves in the period among the nine shots he faced to ensure the Road Warriors went into the third period tied at three.

Greenville made quick work of breaking the tie in the third period thanks to Marc-Olivier Vallerand notching his first goal of the season. Connolly hit Vallerand with a pass from the right wing and the quick snap shot beat Scott Darling 3:55 into the period. Connolly provided a measure of insurance with a power play goal at 9:28 with Sam Klassen and Eddy assisting on the score. The goal was Connolly’s second power play score of the season and matched his total from all of 2010-11. Florida pulled Darling for the extra attacker with just over two minutes left to play, but could not beat Riopel to dent the Road Warriors’ two-goal lead.

Riopel won his third straight game by making 23 saves on the day. Greenville went 1-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-3 on the penalty kill.
