CHECKERS ADD DEPTH UP FRONT

Charlotte Checkers CHECKERS ADD ROOKIE MATT BECA
Forward was MVP at Clarkson in 2009-10

Charlotte Checkers head coach and general manager Jeff Daniels and senior vice president of hockey business operations Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has agreed to terms with rookie forward Matt Beca on a two-way contract.

Beca, 24, completed his fourth year at Clarkson University in 2009-10, leading the team with 20 goals and 38 points. He was named most valuable player at Clarkson, while also taking home ECAC Player of the Week honors in October, 2009. Following the season, Beca skated in five games with the Springfield Falcons (AHL), where he potted one goal.

In 149 career collegiate games, the Mississauga, Ontario native has tallied 51 goals and 72 assists (123 points), while leading Clarkson to an ECAC Hockey Tournament Championship (2007), a conference regular season title (2008) and two consecutive showings in the NCAA Tournament (2007, 2008).

The Checkers’ home opener is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 15 at Time Warner Cable Arena. Season tickets for the inaugural 2010-11 AHL season are now on sale and season ticket packages start as low as $10 per game. Ticket information can be obtained by calling 704-342-4-ICE or visiting www.gocheckers.com.

  1. Checkers are affiliated with Hurricanes. Why not add them also. I am getting confused. Maybe a separate website would clear things up. Are you interested in opinions from readers?

  2. Very simple RCM…I have a great relationship with the entire Checkers organization. They were terrific to me last season and before that as well. I also had a TREMENDOUS amount of followers from Charlotte. Believe it or not, there are almost as many followers of this site from Charlotte as there are from Rangers fans.

I have zero interest in covering the Hurricanes. I’m doing the Checkers out of loyalty to the people who stuck with the site last season and to the people in it who gave so much to me.

If you had a group that was that loyal to you, would you turn your back on them? My personal interests are with the Road Warriors, Wolf Pack/Whalers and the Rangers.

To just throw people overboard that had been so faithful and so supportive to me seemed really unnecessary. It doesn’t take me a whole lot of time and energy to keep them happy and the more following to the site the better for us all.

Besides, don’t you think that some discussions down the road between Pack/Whaler fans and Checkers fans might be fun? I do…

I’m ALWAYS interested in what the readers think.
