Forward ranks second in AHL scoring; Staal recalled from Florida

CHARLOTTE, N.C.Charlotte Checkers general manager and head coach Jeff Daniels announced today that the Carolina Hurricanes have recalled forward Zach Boychuk on emergency conditions and the Checkers have recalled Jared Staal from their ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades.

Boychuk, 21, leads all Checkers and is tied for second in AHL scoring with 32 points (10g, 22a) in 28 games. He recorded a career-high four assists in Sunday’s 5-3 win over Hershey and is currently riding an eight-game road point scoring streak.

It is the first NHL recall of the season for the Alberta native, who spent 31 games with the Hurricanes last year, notching three goals and six assists. Boychuk was a first-round draft pick (14th overall) of the Hurricanes in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Staal, 20, began the season in Charlotte before being re-assigned to Florida on Nov. 18. In 13 games with the Everblades, the Thunder Bay, Ontario native has three goals and three assists. He was a second-round pick (49th overall) of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and was acquired by the Hurricanes on May 13, 2010.

The Checkers (15-9-4) will embark on a five-game road trip beginning tonight in Providence and will return home Saturday, Jan. 1 to host the Binghamton Senators (7 p.m.) for the winter hat giveaway.
