The Greenville Road Warriors knocked off in-state rival South Carolina on back-to-back days last week to earn all four points that were up for grabs. This week Greenville will tangle three times with the South Division-leading Gwinnett Gladiators.

The I-85 Rivalry will kick off this weekend with three games between the Gwinnett Gladiators and the Road Warriors. The games at The Arena at Gwinnett Center will be Greenville’s first road games of the season following a six-game home stand. That stand will close up on Friday with the first game of the season between the clubs. Gwinnett enters the week as the top team in the ECHL with a 5-0-2 record, 12 points, and an .857 winning percentage. The Gladiators are the only team without a regulation loss in the ECHL. Entering this week Greenville has the fifth best winning percentage in the league at .700 following a pair of wins against South Carolina last weekend. A win by the Road Warriors on Friday would give them nine points (out of a possible 12) in their six-game home stand. The Gladiators went 2-0-1 on a northern road trip last week including a 70-shot effort on October 29 which set a league record.

10/29 vs. South Carolina: W 4-1

For the first time this season a Road Warriors opponent got the drop on them by scoring the first goal. South Carolina’s Patrick Cullity whipped home a power play goal with less than one second remaining in the first period. Cullity’s first pro goal would not deter Greenville and three unanswered goals in the second put the Road Warriors back on the right track. Anton Kharin put Greenville on the board at 4:00 of the second with a tip-in of Sam Klassen’s point shot. Cullen Eddy notched the eventual game winner by punching in a loose puck out of a net-front scramble at 11:48 and Julien Brouillette followed with a power play49 seconds later. Andrew Carroll provided an insurance goal at 16:48 of the third to extend his goal streak to three games. Nic Riopel earned the win with a 23-save effort. The Road Warriors were 1-for-9 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.

10/30 vs. South Carolina: W 5-2

Four of the seven goals scored between the Road Warriors and Stingrays on Saturday night came on the power play. Three of them were on Greenville’s side of the scoreboard and helped lead the way to a 5-2 win. Greenville also nearly scored its first shorthanded goal of the season, but Stingrays goalie Jared DeMichiel denied Marc-Olivier Vallerand’s penalty shot attempt at 15:48 of the second period. Julien Brouillette had a big first period with a power play goal and the primary assist on Andrew Carroll’s PPG as Greenville took a 2-1 lead. Josh Godfrey had South Carolina’s goal with the Stingrays on a power play. Greenville’s offense kept rolling in the second period with three markers Justin Bowers, Carroll, and Connor Shields. Bowers’ goal came on the power play and was his first of the season. Shields’ score was also his first of the campaign. Despite 16 third period shots Greenville couldn’t be DeMichiel again on the night, but it didn’t matter with Nic Riopel holding South Carolina off of the scoreboard. Riopel’s third win of the season came with a 28-save effort. Greenville was 3-for-10 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
