The Greenville Road Warriors saw their three-game win streak snapped by the South Carolina Stingrays on Tuesday night. The Road Warriors fell by a 3-1 score and saw their record dropped to 7-4-1.
Greenville was looking to bring the momentum of three straight home wins at the BI-LO Center with them on the road, but it was South Carolina grabbing a 1-0 first period lead. The Road Warriors had a power play just 16 seconds into the game after Dov Grumet-Morris was knocked down in his goal crease, but they couldn’t convert on the advantage. South Carolina went to work on the power play just a short time later and Maxime Lacroix was able to send a rebound past Grumet-Morris for the lone score of the period. In his third start of the season, Grumet-Morris made 14 saves to keep the Road Warriors within striking distance.
In the second period Grumet-Morris was the star for the Road Warriors. After a sluggish start to the period, Greenville registered three quick shots on goal just past the five-minute mark of the frame. Todd Ford was able to snuff out each bid, however, and keep the Stingrays ahead by one. After the Road Warriors’ flury it was Grumet-Morris faced with 14 shots in the second. He was particularly good late in the frame on a South Carolina power play when T.J. Reynolds was whistled for hooking at 15:03. Despite a 29-8 shot disadvantage the Road Warriors were well within reach of the Stingrays at the start of the third.
The third period took a kooky turn quickly that went against the Road Warriors. Following a Stingrays shoot in Trevor Glass lost his footing along the end boards and the puck became trapped underneath him. Tommy Goebel was in the fray and was tangled up with Glass in the right wing corner. Lacroix swept in to take control of the puck and quckly snapped it past a surprised Grumet-Morris at 1:33 for a 2-0 Stingrays lead. Greenville had a golden opportunity to halve the lead when they were awarded 1:30 of 5-on-3 power play time just past the midway point of the third. Ford came through with a sparkling save on Mark Voakes to preserve the two-goal lead for the time being. Brendan Connolly’s fifth goal in his last three games pulled the Road Warriors within one at 14:49 with an assist going to Brandon Wong. A late holding the stick minor against Jimmy Kilpatrick wiped out Greenville’s momentum, however, and Nikita Kashirsky ended up scoring an empty-net power play goal to seal the win.
Grumet-Morris had 34 saves on the night for the Road Warriors while Greenville went 0-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendars! The Road Warriors are back on home ice to take on the Wheeling Nailers at 7:05 p.m. on November 18. The Road Warriros will be having Dollar Draught Thursday with select fountain drinks and draught beers on sale for just $1.
