KUHNS: SOLAR BEARS FLUMMOX SWAMP RABBITS

Greenville fires away, cannot dent the twine

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits fired everything but the kitchen sink, getting a season-high 36 shots on goal towards the Orlando net, but the Solar Bears received timely scoring and slammed the door shut behind a 36-save shutout from rookie goaltender Corbin Boes and defeated the Swamp Rabbits 4-0 on Saturday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Boes stopped 10 Greenville opportunities in the first, 12 in the second, and 14 more in the third. Boes and the rest of the Solar Bears stared down five power-play opportunities, including two to conclude the second period and one to start the third period, but the team stood tall and fended off Greenville’s power play.

Étienne Boutet’s squeaker found a way through Devin Buffalo at the 9:46 mark of the first period, and proved to be the game-winning goal. The Swamp Rabbits controlled a territorial advantage in the first period, but it was the Solar Bears who went to the room on top and would not take long to add on.

It took 53 seconds into the second period for Orlando to strike again. In the midst of a delayed penalty, Brady Shaw broke free on the left wing and swung a pass in front to defenseman Cody Donaghey to extend the lead to 2-0.

Orlando’s power play took over from there. A power play marker on a tip by Brent Petersen with under five minutes to play in the second period gave the Solar Bears a 3-0 lead. Greenville received consecutive power-play opportunities following the goal against, but could not find a way to connect.

The Solar Bears capped the scoring with Shaw on a net-front pass at the 3:07 mark of the third period.

Boes’ first career win is a shutout. Buffalo stopped 28 shots out of 32 fired his way in his second career start.

The Swamp Rabbits return to home ice at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 5 as Greenville plays host to the Norfolk Admirals. Tickets are available at SwampRabbits.com.
