BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings

STORRS, CT – The college hockey season is over, so the UCONN Huskies have announced their season award winners for 2020-21.

Thomas J. Jacquard Award

Thomas Jacquard was a UConn hockey freshman in 1989 when he was involved in a fatal car accident on his way home from Thanksgiving break.

The winner is freshman forward Hudson Schandor of North Vancouver, British Columbia. Over 22 games, Schandor led all Husky freshmen scoring six goals and eight assists for 14 points. Among his tallies were two game-winners, and he blocked 18 shots.  He finished a plus-2 for the season.  Schandor finished the year tied for fifth among Hockey East rookies in scoring.

Team MVP

The 2020-21 Team MVP was awarded to junior Jonny Evans (North Delta, British Columbia).  Evans became the first Husky since 1998 to become a CCM/AHCA All-American when he was named to the second team last month.

In 23 games, he finished with 29 points and led the league with 14 goals.  Over 22 regular-season games, Evans led the team in scoring and was also the winner of the PNC Bank Three Stars award.  He also became the first UConn player to be named a Hockey East First All-Star.  Evans was also a finalist for the Hockey East Player of the Year award and among the original 50 Hobey Baker candidates.

He is undrafted but is likely to get selected in this summer’s NHL Draft.

Seventh Player Award

His teammates vote on the 7th Player as the athlete who has consistently performed above and beyond the call of duty. The winner of the 2020-21 7th Player Award is senior Zac Robbins (Glenview, Ill.).  The senior forward was named an alternate captain for the 2020-21 season.  Robbins played in all 23 games his final season in Storrs and finished with a pair of assists.  Over his career, Robbins appeared in 112 games, had five goals, ten assists, and 15 points.

Silver Bowl Award

As voted on by his teammates, the winner is senior Adam Karashik (Ridgefield/Avon Old Farms).

The senior defenseman wore a letter for the second-straight season serving as the team’s captain in 2020-21.  He played in all 23 games this season and had his best offensive season as a Husky with nine points on a goal and eight assists.  He had 33 blocked shots on the year, tied for seventh in Hockey East.  He finished his career with 119 games played with 24 points on five goals and 19 assists, and 180 blocked shots over his four seasons.

He has grad transferred to Notre Dame (Big 10) for next season.

Coach John Chapman Award

The Coach John Chapman award is given to the program member who has demonstrated what it means to be a leader. He continually made sacrifices for the team, always putting them first.

The coaching staff chooses the winner, and the 2020-21 recipients of the Coach John Chapman award are sophomore Roman Kinal (Waterford, Mich.) and junior John Wojciechowski (Mamaroneck, N.Y.)
