Hartford Wolf Pack

IN THE NEWS

New York R In a move that many saw coming, Ryan McDonagh has decided to forego his college senior year and decided to come out and be a professional. Depending upon how things go in training camp, McDonagh is seen as having NHL ready skills. We don’t really comment on players that we haven’t seen play on more than an occasional basis. We’re big subscribers to the notion that anyone can have a bad/good day and that isn’t fair to the particular player.

However, the consensus seems to be that you are reading about the next young Rangers’ defenseman. Depending upon the signings with the team you’re looking at Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, Michael Del Zotto, Matt Gilroy, and then the power houses of Michael Rozsival and Wade Redden as well as McDonagh.

You have to figure that either or both Rozsival and Redden will either be dealt or sent to Hartford or parts beyond. You would think that the Rangers would need to add one, if not two, veteran defenders for the Blueline. It’s hard to imagine that they would bring up a Corey Potter or Michael Sauer and have two, second-year guys in Del Zotto and Gilroy and two rookies in McDonagh and whomever.

Here’s the official release:

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenseman Ryan McDonagh.McDonagh_R_0706_Ins2

McDonagh, 21, skated in 43 games with the University of Wisconsin Badgers this season, registering four goals and 14 assists for 18 points, along with 73 penalty minutes and a plus-22 rating.  He ranked second on the team in plus/minus rating, and ranked third among team defensemen in assists and points, and fourth in goals.  In his third season with the Badgers, McDonagh established career-highs in games played, assists, points and penalty minutes.  He tallied an assist on the game winning goal in the National Semifinal game vs. R.I.T. on April 8 to help Wisconsin advance to the National Championship game vs. Boston College.  McDonagh finished the tournament with two assists, and was named to the All-West Regional Team.  Earlier in the season, he tallied a season-high, four-game point streak from October 30 vs. New Hampshire to November 7 vs. Minnesota, registering four points (one goal and three assists) over the span.

The 6-1, 222-pounder skated in 119 career NCAA games over three seasons with Wisconsin, recording 14 goals and 32 assists for 46 points, along with 174 penalty minutes.  In 2008-09, McDonagh finished fourth among Badger defensemen in assists (11) and points (16), and tied for third in goals (five).  He was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team and the WCHA All-Academic Team, and was chosen by his teammates as winner of the Fenton Kelsey, Jr. Most Competitive Player award.  As a Freshman in 2007-08, he was named to the 2008 WCHA All-Rookie Team after leading all first year defensemen in the WCHA and tying for first among all Wisconsin defensemen with a career-high, five goals.  He also tied for third in the conference among Freshman defensemen in scoring with 12 points.  McDonagh made his collegiate debut on October 12, 2007 vs. Notre Dame, and tallied his first career point with the game-winning goal on October 19, 2007 vs. Robert Morris.

Prior to his collegiate career, McDonagh was a two-time All-State (Minnesota) and All-Conference high school hockey player.  He was named 2007 Minnesota Mr. Hockey after registering 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points in his Senior year at Cretin-Derham High School.  As a Junior in 2005-06, he helped lead his team to the 2006 Minnesota State, High School title, earning All-Tournament accolades during his team’s title run.

Internationally, McDonagh has represented the United States in several tournaments, including the 2009 World Junior Championship where he registered three assists and tied for the team-lead with a plus-five rating in six contests.  He also captured a Silver Medal with Team USA at the 2007 World U-18 Junior Championship, registering three assists in seven games.

The St. Paul, Minnesota native was acquired by the Rangers, along with forward Christopher Higgins and defenseman Pavel Valentenko, from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for forwards Scott Gomez and Tom Pyatt, and defenseman Mike Busto on June 30, 2009.  He was originally Montreal’s first round choice, 12th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

In news from Hartford, the Wolf Pack are spreading their chritable wings just that much further with this announcement released earlier on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hartford Wolf Pack announced today the launch of a new initiative called “Make a Wolf Pack Wish.”

The Make a Wolf Pack Wish program is designed to bring smiles to the faces of Wolf Pack fans facing adversity or whose lives would be brightened by the opportunity to take advantage of a special Wolf Pack-oriented experience.

There will be various opportunities offered throughout the year, with the first being a pair of free registrations to the New York Rangers’ 2010 Youth Hockey Camp in Bridgeport, CT.  The camp is for players between the ages of seven and 15 and takes place during the week of August 16-19 at the Wonderland of Ice, 123 Glenwood Ave. in Bridgeport.  Campers will receive top-level instruction from professional coaches, Rangers alumni, trainers, scouts and others.

The Wolf Pack are currently seeking nominations of young hockey players for consideration for this outstanding opportunity.  To nominate a deserving individual, or individuals, e-mail Wolf Pack community relations manager Kristen Connolly at kconnolly@xlcenter.com. Nominations will be accepted through 4:00 PM on Friday, July 16.  Nominees must have their own hockey equipment in order to attend the camp.

More information about the youth camp, and the entirety of the Make a Wolf Pack Wish concept, can be found on the Wolf Pack’s official website, www.hartfordwolfpack.com.

Season tickets for the Wolf Pack’s 2010-11 AHL season are on sale now. For information on season seats, and all of the Wolf Pack’s many ticketing options, visit www.hartfordwolfpack.com, or call the Wolf Pack ticket office at (860) 548-2000 to talk with an account executive today.

Potter not expected back with Rangers. Only holdover likely to Sauer. Niemi (sp???) should be with the Wolf Pack — er, Whalers.

Hey, Mitch! Hope your summer is going well. I figured Howlings would be the best place to pose my (not as high profile) extended Rangers Roster questions: (You don’t have to respond here. If you’d rather do a new post I won’t think you’re breaking any blog etiquette rules!)

I haven’t heard anything about Brodie Dupont and Michael Sauer as far as the RFA situation goes. I am assuming they were both qualified, but I haven’t seen that verified anywhere.

All the other RFA’s are either signed (Prust), going to arbitration (Girardi), negotiating (Staal), gone back to Europe (Heikinnen, Ambuhl) or not qualified (Lisin).

I do see that on CapGeek.com, it lists Crowder as UFA. I thought he was a RFA, same with Ambuhl. Does that mean that both weren’t qualified?

What do you think the chances are that Potter comes back? I heard he was looking elsewhere. He seems to think his chances with the Rangers are slim. I think he might be right. He took one step forward with Sanguinetti leaving, but then one back with McDonough’s signing.

Is Zaba also done since both Johnson and Talbot seem set for Hartford?

Is Locke even considered a possibility again?

The ridiculous Patrick Rissmiller is still in our system, but people don’t count him as a cap hit. My guess is they are assuming he will not even be in Rangers camp, but I’m not sure if that is true.

As far as I can tell from your posts, Glass and Ringwald are the only Hartford contracts that have been added this year.

I guess I’m just trying to get an idea of what the Wolf Pack roster might look like. I’m not including the guys who are competing for spots with the Rangers (McDonough, Stepan, Byers, Grachev, Weise): I see the Hartford locks as: Newberry, Hillier, Zaborsky, Chappell, Soryal and DiDiomete. On Defense my guess is: Baldwin, Valentenko, Williams, Kundratek, Klassen, Niemi and Dowzak.

    Thanks for letting me ramble!

If I can paraphrase the late, great Gilda Radner’s hilarious character, “Roseann Roseannadanna,” “Hey Mark…for a guy from Colorado you sure ask a lot of questions…”

Okay…I’ll do my best to answer them…but some of them I just don’t have the answers for…and frankly though a lot of self-anointed experts might through a ton of bull at you, the truth is that most of it is yet to be determined and will be determined based upon what happens at training camp and the moves the organization makes prior…so here goes.

Brodie Dupont was qualified by the Rangers but hasn’t signed yet. Michael Sauer is in the same boat best as I can determine.

Ambuhl signed in Europe after the season was over. He left a lot of money on the table just to come here but decided to go home. Heikkinen made it clear late last season that he wasn’t coming back. He felt, and said it publicly a number of times, that he didn’t feel that the Rangers gave him the chance that he was promised and so he went home as well.

Corey Potter is anyone’s guess. I know that he was being scouted at the end of the year by a number of foreign teams. I witnessed him being talked to by a German scout after one of the last games of the season, but obviously didn’t hear what they were talking about. They could have been talking about great places to get Weiner schnitzel for all I know, but they were talking.

I think you could be right about the one step up, one step back scenario that you presented. The Rangers MAY feel a little differently and follow Tortorella’s edict that he wanted to go younger and make Potter the sixth or seventh defenseman. That remains to be seen.

I have no definitive answer on Crowder or his status. I would just be guessing, and that’s all it is, a guess, is Crowder won’t be back. I just don’t think he really impressed the management as a guy for the future. Now he might just be a familiar body that they look to Ken Gernander and J.J. Daigneault to work with and make more effective. On that only time will tell.

As far as Matt Zaba goes, he could well be a starter in Hartford or in Florida (assuming the rumors of the team aligning with the Everblades turns out to be true). Matt could also try his hand overseas. If you were asking me to put money on it I would say Matt winds up in Europe.

I think depending upon how much money Corey Locke wants, he could be back in Hartford as NY insurance. If he asks for the moon he’s asking for the door. I have zero facts to base this on, but I would not be the least bit surprised if he goes to Europe and if he stays here that he ends up in Hershey. They lost some key players and need an elite scorer. He fits that bill. But we’ll see.

Tommy Zaborsky is not coming back to Hartford. He is signed to play next season in Europe. Devin DiDiomete is coming off a lower body injury and had surgery. He will likely miss the start of the season still recovering from it.

I won’t snow you or the other readers…the rest I have no idea right now. To be completely honest, I’ve been spending more time concentrating on my recruiting business than on hockey thus far so I’m not as in touch as I might ordinarily be.

Crowder and Ambuhl were not RFA’s because they were not drafted — thus, their UFA status.

And you are correct, Crowder did not impress.

BTW — has Gernander been hired for the new season?

  5. Mitch Beck

Here’s a quick related note…Corey Locke has signed with the Ottawa Senators on a two-way deal. Here’s the link… So much for my Hershey and Europe theories. 🙂

Ex-Pack are signing all over…ex-Captain Andrew Hutchinson, according to TSN, has signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

  7. Brenda

And don’t forget, the Pack also lost P.A. Parenteau as he signed a one year deal with the New York Islanders. What is becoming of the Pack? I’m almost afraid to ask.

Ex-Pack Hugh Jessiman is about to sign with the Chicago Blackhawks…
