Some surprises in who was cut today…not the least of which was Dale Weise. We thought Dale was playing exceptionally well and was on a fast track to make it in New York. What is also a surprise is that Michael Sauer is still in New York after what has seemed to be an iffy pre-season to this point.
Now the question arises, Do last year’s Captain, Dane Byers and forward Kris Newbury make it through waivers to get to Hartford in the first place.
Wade Redden cleared waivers and has been assigned to the Wolf Pack.It might still be a couple of days before anyone knows if he reports or has found a place in Europe. If we were guessing he will at least be in the Pack locker room for the time being. Redden could become an unrestricted free agent if he walked away from his contract by not reporting, but that would be nothing short of insane.
Our guess is that Michael Sauer and Pavel Valentenko get sent to Hartford. The guys on the bubble up front are: Todd White, Tim Kennedy, Brian Boyle and Brandon Prust. Two of them will likely stay in New York and two will head to Hartford. Kennedy will likely be Hartford bound because he’s young and needs to play and then it’s anyone’s guess…
As an aside, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that ex-Ranger first round picks, Al Montoya (Phoenix) and Hugh Jessiman (Chicago) have both been put on waivers. Also, Steve Zipay reports that ex-Pack/Ranger Jed Ortmeyer has accepted an invitation to the Islanders Training camp on a Professional Try-Out (PTO).
Here’s the complete list from TSN of players who were put on waivers. Notice the large number of ex-Pack players on it.

Mitch,
Is Redden now the highest paid AHL player ever?
I see it differently regarding the forwards – I believe Prust, Kennedy and Boyle are locks. I expect both Stepan and McDonagh to start in Hartford.
I hope Sauer stays up, and that a roster spot isn’t handed to Fedotenko.
Mitch or anyone, do you know? Is it true that Byers, DuPont and Sauer only need to pass thru waivers this first time, then can shuttle up and back?
Redden is by far the highest paid player in the AHL. What is going to be interesting to watch is if he comes in and is a total team guy and works with the younger kids or if he comes in like Alex Mogilny and insists on only playing in home games.
Personally, I think Redden will come in and be an Assistant Captain and be a big help to the team. He’s making a lot of money and to quote Robert Wahl’s character in “Bull Durham” “It’s better than selling Lady Kenmore’s”
Cwede,
I think Stepan for sure makes the Rangers. Remember how much they have been running at the mouth about bringing in the kids? If htey send the two of them back, who’s the kid? I also think McDonagh makes it.
Of the three you chose I think Prust is the most likely to get cut. They have a fighter now and he really hasn’t looked impressive in camp at all. Kennedy is probably there until Drury gets back and then he’ll get more time playing in Hartford. Boyle probably will make the team.
I think Sauer has NOT been that good at all.
Dupont did pass through waivers and yes, Byers has to pass through waivers also because he has more than three years of pro experience. Sauer, to the best off the top of my head has two years. I think this is his third so he wouldn’t have to pass through.
We’ll know for sure soon enough.
Redden’s agent Don Meehan said today that Redden will report to Hartford on Wednesday
