Well, it’s NOT Mel Gibson that’s for sure. Although it does bear a striking resemblance.
The Greenville Road Warriors, ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, introduced their mascot this afternoon at The Upstate Children’s Museum in downtown Greenville. The team also announced a “Name the Mascot” contest that will give one lucky child the opportunity to introduce the “Road Hog” at the Road Warriors’ home opener on October 21.
“Today is an exciting day for the Road Warriors. We are proud to welcome our ‘Road Hog’ into the Road Warriors family and can’t wait for all of our fans to meet him. Now all that’s left is for the school children of the Upstate to help us find a name for him. We also want to thank The Children’s Museum for allowing us to have the announcement at their great venue,” said Road Warriors president and general manager Neil Smith.
THE “ROAD HOG’S” STORY:
The “Road Hog” was found by Coach Dean Stork on the side of Interstate 85 earlier this week. After realizing the poor guy had no family or home to return to Coach Stork put him into the back of his truck and brought him to the BI-LO Center. The “Road Hog” loved the ice, got along great with the team’s staff, and was thrilled when Neil Smith asked him to stay and be the mascot for the team. But since the fuzzy creature can’t speak no one with the Road Warriors knows his name. That’s where the school children throughout the Upstate need to lend a hand.
The Road Warriors will be emailing entry forms to area schools, and the form will also be available to download at www.greenvilleroadwarriors.com and www.tcmupstate.org. Students can also enter the contest by emailing their name idea to Contest@GreenvilleRoadWarriors.com with your name, school & grade. Completed entry forms can be faxed to the Road Warriors at 864-250-4793 or mail them to PO Box 85, Greenville, SC 29602 attention NAME THE MASCOT. The lucky winner will get to introduce the mascot at the Road Warriors’ first home game, a free pizza party for them and their classmates at the game, and a visit from the “Road Hog!” Entries must be submitted by Wednesday, October 15, 2010.
Don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of hockey’s return to the Upstate! Season tickets for the Greenville Road Warriors’ 2010-11 campaign are on sale now and you can reserve yours for as little as $100.
