* The Rangers opened their Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 2-1 overtime loss tonight at Verizon Center, in Game One of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals matchup vs. the Washington Capitals. The Capitals’ Alexander Semin tallied the game-winning goal at 18:24 of the overtime period.
* Tonight’s contest marked the sixth time the Rangers and Capitals required overtime in the playoffs, and New York is now 2-4 in those contests. This was the longest contest between the two teams, out-lasting the previous longest by 11:36 (Apr. 27, 1990 – 66:48).
* After two scoreless periods, Matt Gilroy opened the game’s scoring at 1:56 of the third period, and logged 16:22 of ice time while making his NHL playoff debut.
* Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves in 78:24 of ice time (1.53 GAA, .939 Sv%), and is now 14-17 with a 2.62 goals against average, a .909 save percentage and three shutouts in 31 career playoff contests. Tonight was Lundqvist’s 30th consecutive start in the postseason. Including the regular season, Lundqvist has now started in each of the last 27 games for the Rangers.
* Wojtek Wolski tallied the primary assist on Gilroy’s third period goal, and has now registered eight assists and 15 points in 23 career playoff contests. Including the final three games of the regular season, Wolski has now recorded four points (one goal, three assists) in the last four games.
* Brandon Prust also registered an assist on Matt Gilroy’s goal while making his NHL playoff debut. He was also credited with a team-high, five hits and logged 21:21 of ice time. Prust’s regular season career-high for ice time is 18:35, recorded earlier this season on Jan. 1 at Tampa Bay.
* Dan Girardi recorded a team-high, five blocked shots, was credited with three hits and logged 32:50 of ice time. Marc Staal led all skaters with 33:48 of ice time.
* The Blueshirts’ practice schedule for tomorrow, Apr. 14, is 1:00 p.m. at Verizon Center.
* The Rangers will return to action when they face-off against the Washington Capitals on Friday, Apr. 15, at Verizon Center (7:30 p.m.), in Game Two of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals match-up. The game will be televised live on MSG Network, and can be heard on 1050 ESPN Radio and www.newyorkrangers.com.
