WARRIORS HOPE TO STING SOUTH CAROLINA

Ray SchmittBY: Ray Schmitt, Voice of the Greenville Road Warriors

After living their nickname for the last eight days, the Greenville Road Warriors return to home ice to take on the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:35 p.m. in their second-annual Pink in the Rink presented by Greenville Hospital System to benefit the Mary Kay Foundation.

The Road Warriors (34-20-4, 72 pts.) host South Carolina (32-22-4, 68 pts.) today for the 10th of 16 meetings between the clubs. Fans can follow the action by watching live on America One or listening at GreenvilleRoadWarriors.com. The Road Warriors are 7-2-0 against the Stingrays this season and 16-10-0 all-time in their history against South Carolina. The Road Warriors have been particularly good against South Carolina at home this season where they have earned five out of their seven victories in the season series and have limited South Carolina to .8 goals per game. The Road Warriors play seven of their final 14 games of the season against the Stingrays (three at home, four on the road).

Greenville is hosting its second-annual Pink in the Rink presented by Greenville Hospital System to benefit the Mary Kay Foundation tonight. The Road Warriors will be skating on pink ice and wearing pink-themed jerseys and hosting a number of other activities to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer. Fans who already have tickets for the game are encouraged to show up for the early 5:30 opening of the doors so they can come to the free Hockey 101/Women’s Health Education Seminar beginning at 5:45. Presenting the seminar will be Road Warriors president and general manager Neil Smith and the director of Greenville Hospital System’s Breast Health Program, Dr. Brian McKinley.

Who: Greenville Road Warriors vs. South Carolina Stingrays
What: Home Game #29, Season Game #59
When: 7:35 p.m.
Where: BI-LO Center, 650 N. Academy St., Greenville, SC 29601

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Goalie Jason Missiaen is third among rookie goalies with 16 wins on the season. He went 8-4-1 in February while starting 13 of Greenville’s 14 games.
  • Jyri Niemi has scored six goals in his last six games and is working on a two-game goal streak (3G). He has three goals in his last four home games.
  • The Road Warriors’ magic number to clinch a Kelly Cup Playoffs berth is 19. Any combination of the 9th place team losing standings points and the Road Warriors gaining points will shrink the number.
  • The Road Warriors are 3-2-0 the last five times their opponent has scored first in a game. They have won the last two.
  • Greenville’s 21 wins against South Division opponents are second most in the league behind Elmira which has 22 against the Atlantic Division.
