TONIGHT’S GAME

The Rangers play their 42nd game of the 2017-18 season and conclude a back-to-back set tonight, Jan. 7, against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena (9:30 p.m. ET – TV: MSG+; Radio: ESPN 1050 AM). The Rangers conclude their fifth of 11 back-to-back sets during the 2017-18 season tonight. The Rangers have posted a 3-1-0 record in the second game of a back-to-back set this season. New York’s 11 back-to-back sets this season are tied for the fewest among Eastern Conference teams. Since the start of last season, the Blueshirts have posted a 14-6-0 record in the second game of a back-to-back set. In their last 102 back-to-back sets (since the start of the 2010-11 season), the Rangers have posted a 67-29-6 record in the second game of the set.

TEAM EFFORT

The Rangers are the only NHL team that has 14 players who have recorded 13 or more points this season. The Blueshirts are also the only NHL team that has nine players who have registered eight or more goals thus far in 2017-18.

SAVING THE DAY

Over the last 12 games (since Dec. 11 vs. Dallas), Henrik Lundqvist and Ondrej Pavelec have posted a .948 SV% (417 saves on 440 shots). One of the two goaltenders has made 30 or more saves in 11 of the last 12 contests. In addition, Lundqvist or Pavelec has posted a .938 SV% or better in nine of 12 games over the span.

New York has posted a 7-1-0 record in eight games against Pacific Division opponents in 2017-18. The Rangers have posted a 37-8-5 record in 50 games against teams in the Pacific Division since the start of the 2014-15 season, including an 18-3-1 record in 22 contests since the start of last season.

AV SQUAD

Alain Vigneault earned his 635th career win as an NHL head coach on Jan. 1 against Buffalo, passing Darryl Sutter for sole possession of 11th place on the NHL’s all-time wins list among head coaches. The Rangers begin the second half of the 2017-18 season tonight. Since Vigneault became the Rangers’ head coach in 2013-14, the Blueshirts have posted a 99-49-16 record in games 42-82 of a season.

KING HENRIK

Among NHL goaltenders who have made at least 20 starts this season, Henrik Lundqvist is tied for fifth in SV% (.924). He has posted a 5-2-2 record, along with a 2.05 GAA and a .943 SV% (316 saves on 335 shots) in his last nine appearances, and he has made at least 30 saves in each of those appearances. Lundqvist has made 30 or more saves in nine consecutive appearances for the first time in his NHL career. In addition, he has posted a 17-6-2 record, along with a 2.33 GAA, a .931 SV%, and 1 SO in 26 appearances since Oct. 31 vs. Vegas; he is tied for second in the NHL in wins over the span, and he also ranks fourth in SV% among goaltenders who have appeared in at least 20 games over the stretch. Lundqvist has posted a .900 SV% or better in each of his last 13 appearances, dating back to Dec. 1 vs. Carolina. Lundqvist’s stretch of 13 consecutive appearances with a .900 SV% or better is tied for the second-longest streak of his career (career-best is 14; Jan. 17, 2012 – Feb. 27, 2012). He earned his 424th career NHL win last night at Arizona, passing Tony Esposito for sole possession of eighth place on the NHL’s all-time wins list.

Lundqvist enters tonight’s contest with 19 wins in 2017-18. With his next win this season, Lundqvist would…

• become the first goaltender in NHL history to earn 20 or more wins in each of his first 13 seasons
• become the first goaltender in NHL history to earn at least 20 wins in 13 consecutive seasons at any point during the course of a career (Lundqvist, Martin Brodeur, and Tony Esposito are the only goaltenders who have won 20 or more games in 12 straight seasons)

Lundqvist has started both games of a back-to-back set 81 times in his NHL career. In the second game of those 81 sets, he has posted a 53-21-7 record, along with a 2.02 GAA, a .930 SV%, and 9 SO. In addition, Lundqvist has posted an 8-0-0 record, along with a 1.73 GAA, a .948 SV%, and 1 SO in the second game of the last eight back-to-back sets in which he has started both contests, and he has allowed two goals or fewer in all eight contests.

PAV’S PARTY

Ondrej Pavelec has posted a 2-0-1 record, along with a 1.26 GAA, a .966 SV% (115 saves on 119 shots), and 1 SO in his last three appearances. In addition, Pavelec has stopped 74 of 75 shots he has faced in his last two appearances (.987 SV%). 

VESEY DOES IT

Jimmy Vesey recorded a goal last night at Arizona. He is tied for second on the Rangers in even-strength goals this season (nine).
