Norfolk shuts out Greenville on Friday night

BY: Jordan Kuhns, Greenville Swamp Rabbits

BOXSCORE

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits fired 46 shots towards the Norfolk net, among their season high in that output, but Norfolk Admirals goaltender Ty Reichenbach made 46 saves to flummox the Swamp Rabbits’ offense, and lead the Admirals to a 3-0 win on Friday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Reichenbach was tested with a volume of shots throughout, including 17 in the first, 17 more in the second, and 12 in the third period, and helped kill off all six Greenville power plays in the win.

Two goals in the first period for the visitors proved to be enough. Matt McMorrow started the scoring at the 4:30 mark of the first period after a large carom off of the end wall eluded all defenders and caught McMorrow at the side of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Domenic Alberga doubled the lead six minutes later on a 3-on-2 break. Darik Angeli fed Alberga in the right circle, and his snap shot beat Chris Nell for the second goal of the game.

Nell kept the game in reach with a sprawling stick save on a penalty kill in the third period, one of his 29 stops of the night. However, the offense could not break through to get the game tied in the third.

The scoring remained quiet until the third period, where Jalen Smereck put the game away for Norfolk.

Greenville had three power-play opportunities in the first period, and a critical chance late in the third period to try and claw back, but the power play remained chilly and could not convert on the four chances they had.

The Swamp Rabbits were shut out for the sixth time this season.

The Swamp Rabbits will celebrate Stomper’s Birthday on Sunday, January 27 against the South Carolina Stingrays at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available at SwampRabbits.com.
