CALL ME SENTIMENTAL…OKAY, JUST MENTAL

Charlotte Checkers When professional sports franchises do great things for the community it REALLY means something to me. The Rangers have their play on the ice as charity for the other teams…okay that was honest but uncalled for…It was just a joke. All kidding aside, the Rangers do magnificent work with The Ronald McDonald House and The Garden of Dreams and is there ever a minute of the day where Adam Graves is NOT running from a charity event to another? The Wolf Pack also do a tremendous amount of charity work through their Hartford Wolf Pack Community Foundation. The Ryan Gordon-Hartford Wolf Pack Community Scholars Fund does great work and we’re always honored to help wherever we can with it. The Charlotte Checkers are no different. They have a boat load of different charitable organizations that they work with. Right now the focus of the Checkers is on Habitat for Humanity and they have undertaken another successful venture that the team’s fans an those at large should be aware of. The official release is below.

We congratulate all three of these franchises for recognizing the importance and truth of a simple adage so well expressed by the character Uncle Ben in the film, Spiderman, “With great power comes great responsibility.” All three seem to know it and act on it.

CHECKERS ANNOUNCE THIRD HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOME

Residence To Be Constructed And Donated To Deserving Local Family

The Charlotte Checkers have once again partnered with Sutter Home Family Vineyards and Charlotte Habitat for Humanity ReStores to raise money and construct a home for a local Charlotte family.

In 2008, the Checkers became the first ever ECHL team to complete a home building for Habitat for Humanity and a year later helped construct a second dwelling. This year, with help from front office and hockey operations staff as well as sponsors, the team will attempt the feat a third time.

The Checkers and Sutter Home Family Vineyards will begin construction in mid-April with a 12-week plan to complete the home. Both the team and Sutter Home plan to raise the necessary funds needed for the project through various programs.

Sutter Home will advertise the event on the necks of their wine bottles which can be found throughout Charlotte area retail stores. Fans are encouraged to purchase a bottle of wine at their local retail store and mail in their capsule.  For every capsule received, $1 will be donated to the overall goal. The mailing address for the donations will be located on the wine neckers.

“We are thrilled to partner for a third year with the Checkers and Habitat for Humanity,” said Wendy Nyberg, senior director of marketing for Sutter Home. “Year after year, we are incredibly touched by the impact that this program has on the Charlotte community and we hope this partnership continues far into the future. Supporting a family on such a personal level is heartwarming and very meaningful for all of us at Sutter Home.”

Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte is an independent nonprofit organization who works closely with neighborhoods, their associations, and local leaders to create sustainable development projects that focus on the best interest of the entire community. Since 1983, Habitat Charlotte has partnered with over 900 families and built in over 35 neighborhoods throughout the city.

“We are so pleased to work with the Charlotte Checkers and Sutter Homes Family Vineyards for our third consecutive year, and are thankful for their partnership and support of our mission,” said Bert Green, executive director for Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte. “They have made a significant impact in our community each year, and we are excited for them to partner with our Charlotte ReStores on this build.”

About Sutter Home Family Vineyards: Sutter Home Winery is wholly owned and operated by the Trinchero family, Napa Valley vintners since 1947. The company produces more than 22 brands of wine including Trinchero Napa Valley, Main Street, Napa Cellars, Terra d’Oro, Montevina, Trinity Oaks, Folie à Deux, Ménage à Trois, and the number one alcohol-removed wine, Fre. The company also imports Angove Family Winemakers and Little Boomey wines of Australia, and markets and sells the Three Thieves and Joel Gott brands. For more information, visit www.sutterhome.com.

About Habitat for Humanity ReStore: In 1996, the Habitat ReStore first opened as a fundraising division of Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte. Today, merchandise continues to be donated by individuals and corporations, then sold to the public, with profits used to build Habitat homes. While their primary mission is to increase the number of Habitat homes built each year, the ReStore staff also strives to prevent usable items from being put in landfills.
