The Rangers were defeated by the Atlanta Thrashers, 6-4, tonight at Madison Square Garden to end their winning streak at three games.  New York is now 4-3-1 overall, including a 1-2-1 mark at home.  Martin Biron started in net for the Rangers, marking the first time Henrik Lundqvist did not start at The Garden since October 19, 2009 vs. San Jose (L, 3-7).

Ryan Callahan opened the game’s scoring just 38 seconds into the first period and added an assist to extend his scoring streak to four games.  He has registered six points (two goals and four assists) during the stretch, including an assist in each of the four games, and is now tied for the team lead with six assists and eight points in eight games.

Sean Avery registered his third multi-point performance with one goal and one assist, and has now tallied three points (one goal and two assists) in the last two games.  Avery is tied for the team lead with six assists and ranks third on the team in scoring with seven points on the season.

Ruslan Fedotenko recorded his first multi-point effort as a Ranger with two assists, and registered three shots and three hits in 15:39 of ice time.  He has now registered five points (one goal and four assists) in the last six games.

Todd White notched his first goal as a Ranger with an even strength tally at 7:56 of the third period, and won seven of nine faceoffs for a 78% success rate.  White, who played for the Thrashers from 2007-08 to 2009-10, has now registered 17 points (seven goals and 10 assists) in 13 career regular season games against Atlanta.

Brandon Dubinsky tallied the primary assist on White’s third period goal to extend his scoring streak to three games, registering four points (one goal and three assists) over the span.  Dubinsky also recorded four hits and logged 20:31 of ice time.

Brian Boyle notched his third goal of the season at 10:07 of the third period to pull the Rangers to within one, and finished the contest with four hits and two blocked shots.

Artem Anisimov and Dan Girardi each registered one assist in the contest.  Anisimov recorded the only assist on Callahan’s first period goal, and has now tallied three points (two goals and one assist) in the last four games.  Dan Girardi registered the primary assist on Avery’s second period goal, and led the Rangers with 22:58 of ice time.

Brandon Prust led the team with five hits in 17:40 of ice time, and has now registered 10 hits in the last two games.

The Blueshirts’ practice schedule for tomorrow, October 28, is 12:00 p.m. at the MSG Training Center.

The Rangers will close out their three-game homestand on Friday, October 29, when they will face-off against the Carolina Hurricanes at Madison Square Garden (7:00 p.m.), in the first game of a back-to-back set.  The game will be televised live on MSG Plus, and can be heard on 970 The Apple.

“We have had a little bit of a run here…three games.  This, we talked about it before the game, is an important game.  These are the games we need to learn how to take the next step and be consistent and we didn’t do that.  We did it in minutes of the game but certainly not for 60 (minutes).  We do not do it consistently enough.  That is on us.  We have to find a way to do it better.”

Marc Staal on the comeback…

“We didn’t give up. We were down three goals and kept going after them and kept playing. That’s a positive we can take into Friday. Obviously, we can’t get down 5-2 but to be down three goals, usually you’re out of it, we managed to get ourselves back in the game and gave ourselves a chance to win it.”

“We have to get pucks in there.  We have to do that the whole night.  We cannot do that every once in awhile and expect to win.  It was a good push but it was too little too late.  You have to give credit to them.  They executed their game plan pretty well by running the trap on us.”
