RABBITS TAILS
The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (12-7-2-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, and the South Carolina Stingrays (10-4-3-1) hit the ice tonight at the North Charleston Coliseum tonight at 7:05 p.m. The game is the second of three contests between the intrastate rivals after the clubs met on Sunday afternoon. The Swamp Rabbits relied on a late comeback to capitalize on a 5-4 victory in overtime. With the win, Greenville has compiled a 2-1-1-0 record against the Stingrays and earned an 8-3-1-0 record in divisional play. The Stingrays slipped to a tie with Atlanta for third in the South Division while Greenville has a two-point cushion in second place.
SUNDAY RECAP
The Swamp Rabbits trailed the Stingrays by two goals twice on Sunday. Greenville rallied back to take it’s first win in North Charleston this season. Caleb Herbert netted a pair of goals in addition to tallies by Austin McKay and Joe Houk. The woes for the Swamp Rabbits power play continued as the unit went 1-for-9 on the man advantage. However, the tying goal came with 1:10 left in regulation with Greenville on the power play. For the second game of the week, Greenville needed overtime to decide a game, however, a shootout was avoided when Allan McPherson notched the game-winner just 14 seconds into the extra frame.
THE BEST AROUND
Forward Caleb Herbert is the top skater in the ECHL with 33 points (15G, 18A) and this morning was named the CCM / ECHL Player of the Month for November. The Swamp Rabbits winger led the league in the first full month of the season, netting 11 goals and adding 12 assists for 23 points in 13 games. Herbert’s plus-12 also led the league and earned him recognition as the AMI Graphics Plus Performer of the Month.
WINNER, WINNER CHICKEN DINNER
A fifth-year pro, Allan McPherson potted the game-winning goal on Sunday afternoon in overtime. The goal was McPherson’s ninth of the campaign and was his first game-winning tally since Feb. 27, 2016. Although McPherson has notched eight game-winning goals in his career, it was only his second overtime goal in 216 pro games. The Kinburn, Ontario native is tied atop the league with 19 assists this season and ranks second among all scorers behind Herbert with 28 points.
JACK OF ALL TRADES
Jack Nevins helped spark the Swamp Rabbits in the first period Sunday, dropping the gloves with Trevor Gillies after Greenville fell behind 2-0. The winger then added an assist during the second period to help tie the game. The Stittsville, Ontario native has recorded a point in each of the last two games and has tallied seven points (1G, 6A) this season. Nevins is second on the Swamp Rabbits with 79 PIMS and sixth in the league.
HOUK ABOUT THAT!
Defenseman Joe Houk has scored seven points (3G, 4A) in four games against the Stingrays this season and is tied with Herbert and South Carolina defenseman Frankie Simonelli for the most points in the head-to-head matchup. The blue-liner has been a thorn in the side of Greenville’s rival. Since joining the Swamp Rabbits, Houk has scored 14 points (5G, 9A) in 21 games against the Stingrays. The Richboro, PA native has also recorded a pair of game-winning goals in the intrastate rivalry.
