CAMPBELL IN WHALE SOUP

By Mitch Beck

Connecticut WhaleThe Connecticut Whale make a signing for next season. Former 5th round pick Max Campbell will be in camp in September.

According to Hockey’s Future, Campbell is a playmaking center and a left-handed shot. Of him they say that he is a, “a real offensive threat on the power play.” However, they caution that he needs to improve his speed to make it at the next level.

Of Campbell they say the following:

A highly skilled player with good hockey sense and a nose for the net, Campbell has a lot of upside.

“Max seems to excel in pressure situations. He has consistently shown the ability to make the big play when the game is on the line.”– Rich Brown, NY Rangers Amateur Scout.

In danger of becoming a specialty player, to succeed at the next level, Campbell will need to better round his game.

Here’s the official release:

Western Michigan University Leading Scorer was Fifth-round Ranger Pick in 2007

HARTFORD, CT – Connecticut Whale general manager Jim Schoenfeld announced today that the team has signed forward Max Campbell to an American Hockey League contract.

Campbell, a 6-0, 190-pound, 22-year-old native of Strathroy, Ontario, just completed a four-year career at Western Michigan University.  Campbell posted college career highs of 42 games-played, 18 goals, 17 assists and 35 points this past season, leading all Western Michigan skaters in points and goals.

Highlights of his season included a game-winning overtime goal March 13 vs. Ferris State that sent Western Michigan to its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Semi-final berth since 1993, and a four-point game (one goal, three assists) that tied a personal career high November 26, in a 5-2 win over #5 Miami.

A fifth-round (138th overall) draftee by the parent New York Rangers in 2007 prior to his college career, Campbell posted Western Michigan career totals of 154 games-played, 46 goals, 61 assists, 107 points and 113 penalty minutes.
