Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, announced today that the team has acquired the rights of forward, Jack Nevins from the Quad City Mallards for the upcoming season and have also come to terms on a contract. In exchange, the Swamp Rabbits sent the negotiating rights of Desmond Bergin to the Mallards.
Nevins, 23, was extended a qualifying offer by the Mallards on July 1st but had not signed a contract for the upcoming season. Greenville’s signing of the fourth year pro brings the team up to nine offseason announcements this season. The Swamp Rabbits newest skater played his first season in the ECHL last year after two full campaigns at the AHL level. With the Mallards, Nevins totaled 24 points (11G, 13A) in 61 outings and recorded 122 PIMS, which included 14 fighting majors. He led the Mallards in penalty minutes,
“Jack is going to be a tough player in our lineup. He has played the majority of his career in the AHL and made a physical impact for every team he has played for,” said head coach Brian Gratz. “In the ECHL, Jack has shown he can contribute on the scoreboard as well as being a physical presence in the offensive zone. We are excited to welcome Jack to the organization and see him on the ice in October.”
The Stittsville, Ontario native has played over 100 games in the AHL, splitting time with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Rochester Americans, and the Iowa Wild. The 6-foot-2, 207 pound forward’s five points (4G, 1A) were coupled with 214 PIMS. Nevins earned his first pro point, an assist, in his AHL debut with Hamilton on April 12, 2014. Nevins signed his first pro contract in December of 2013 with the Montreal Canadiens, while playing for the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL.
“I’m excited and looking forward to the opportunity to play in Greenville,” said Nevins. “I’m a physical player and play a high energy role in the lineup, chipping in on offense when I can. Fans can expect me to bring a physical brand of hockey every night.”
Before turning pro, he captained the Islanders during the 2013-14 season, earning 36 points (14G, 22A) in 41 games. He then was acquired by the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies for a playoff run, produced 12 points (5G, 7A) in 23 regular season games and eight points (5G, 3A) in nine postseason contests. Between the OHL and QMJHL, Jack played in 176 games with six different teams and earned 74 points (32G, 42A) and 347 PIMS.
Bergin, 24, played 60 games for the Swamp Rabbits last season and earned 26 points (7G, 19A) on the blue line. The defenseman was given a qualifying offer by the Swamp Rabbits on July 3rd. The 5-foot-11 defenseman’s rookie campaign was highlighted by back-to-back two-goal games in December while skating as a forward.
