RABBIT TALES
The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (17-16-2-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf from Pack, hit the ice tonight at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena at 7 p.m. Two points are on the line between the Swamp Rabbits and Orlando Solar Bears (16-16-4-1) who are both tied for third place in the South Division Standings. Greenville enters the contest with hopes of a fourth victory against Orlando this season. The Solar Bears won their last three games against Jacksonville and are 5-2-0-1 in their last eight games. The first 1,000 fans in the building tonight will also receive a free Swamp Rabbits Scarf.
STREAK WORTH BREAKING
This is the first time all season that the Swamp Rabbits have gone winless in three consecutive games. Greenville has responded with wins in response to losses this season, compiling an 8-5-1-1 record after falling in regulation. The team has never had a “pointless” week this season, earning at least one standings point in all 13 weeks of the ECHL season.
LEADERS OF THE PACK
Swamp Rabbits forward Caleb Herbert and Solar Bears forward Josh Winquist are both among the top-10 scorers in the ECHL this season. The club leaders have averaged over a point per game. Herbert has recorded 36 points (16G, 20A) and is +16 this season. Winquist is seventh in the league with 38 points (14G, 24A) and is dangerous on the power play with a league-leading 18 points on the man advantage. Despite his scoring on the power play, Winquist is -13 on the season and is one of only two of the ECHL’s top-10 scorers with a negative plus/minus.
LOG-JAM
Greenville is currently tied for third place with both Orlando and Atlanta with 37 points in the South Division Standings. The Swamp Rabbits have played fewer games than both the Solar Bears and Gladiators this season and hold a higher win percentage than their rivals. Including tonight, Greenville will play 13 straight games against South Division teams with five games against Atlanta. The Swamp Rabbits and Solar Bears have three more head to head contests this season, but will not meet again until Mar. 10.
NEXT STOP, GREENVILLE
Forward Shane Walsh joins the Swamp Rabbits from the Cincinnati Cyclones after Thursday afternoon’s trade for future considerations. The second-year pro has played 11 games this season, missing considerable time due to injury. As a rookie, the UMass alum earned 45 points (19G, 26A) in 71 games. Walsh played two games against the Swamp Rabbits last season, netting his last ECHL goal on Apr. 7, 2017 against the Swamp Rabbits. The 5-foot-10 forward has also gone nearly a year without taking a penalty, serving two minutes for his last infraction on Jan. 15, 2017 at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
CARROT BITES
- Greenville has squared off 53 times against Orlando in franchise history compiling a 26-21-6 all-time record.
- Forward Joe Basaraba leads Greenville against Orlando with nine points (2G, 7A) in five meetings.
