GREENVILLE, S.C. — Forward Gage Torrel has agreed to terms on a Standard Player Contract with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits for the upcoming 2020–21 season. Torrel, 26, will enter his second full professional season in the ECHL.
Torrel’s pro career has seen him play for the Fort Wayne Komets, the Rapid City Rush and the Florida Everblades. His most productive tenure was the 16 games he played in Fort Wayne last season, where he posted 9 points in 16 games (2 goals, 7 assists).
“I”m excited. It’s a new opportunity for me knowing there’s a new coach and new ownership,” Torrel said. “My brother is based in North Carolina and my mom has a place in South Carolina, so it will be nice to be close to family as well.”
The Minnesotan enjoyed a productive four years at Lake Superior State University, where he garnered two Soo Blueliner’s Jim Howie Unsung Hero Awards, one Most Valuable Forward award, and one WCHA All-Academic Team honor. Over 148 games at the college level, Torrel scored 34 goals and 48 assists and racked up 157 penalty minutes. He led the Lakers in goals during his sophomore season with 14.
“Gage is a two-way forward that can play all three forward positions. He can do a little bit of everything, from his ability to play anywhere up front, to being able to play on the PK and jump in on the power play,” head coach Andrew Lord said. “He had a good college career and now has a year of pro experience under his belt which is valuable. He is a good teammate and I am happy to have him on board for the upcoming season.”
Torrel played in three different junior leagues after playing two years for Monticello High School. He played for the Alexandria Blizzard of the NAHL, the Fargo Force of the USHL, and the Langley Rivermen of the BCHL. He helped the Force reach the Clark Cup Final in 2012–13 and scored 4 points in 13 games during the playoff run. Torrel ranked 12th in BCHL scoring in his final junior season in 2014–15.
