NEWBURY RECALLED

New York RWith Brandon Dubinsky nursing a shoulder injury and Ruslan Fedotenko suffering from back spasms, Kris Newbury has been recalled from the Connecticut Whale to join the Rangers for their game with the Montreal Canadiens. That’s one long day of travel. A nine-hour ride from Norfolk, VA to Hartford, Connecticut and then a flight up to Montreal for the game with Les Habs. Fortunately for the Whale, they don’t play again until next Wednesday when they travel to Portland for a head-to-head with the Pirates.

Here’s the official release:

NEW YORK RANGERS TRANSACTION UPDATE
Kris Newbury Recalled from Connecticut

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Kris Newbury has been recalled from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Newbury, 29, has registered 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points, along with 80 penalty minutes in 30 games this season.  He leads Connecticut in goals, points and shots on goal (108), is tied for the team lead in assists and penalty minutes, and is tied for third in power play goals (four).  He is also tied for ninth in the AHL in points, and is tied for 14th in the league in goals and assists.  Newbury posted a season-high, eight-game point streak from December 16 vs. Bridgeport to January 2 at Portland, registering 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) over the span.  He began the season with a hat trick in the season opener on October 8 at Adirondack.  Newbury skated in six games with the Rangers earlier this season, making his season debut with the Blueshirts on October 18 at Vancouver.

The Brampton, Ontario native was acquired by the Rangers from Detroit, in exchange for Jordan Owens on March 3, 2010.  He was originally selected by the San Jose Sharks as a fifth round choice, 139th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
