Providence, RI, February 25, 2018 – Zane McIntyre stopped all 24 Hartford Wolf Pack shots Sunday at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center Providence, in a 2-0 Providence Bruin victory that gained the Bruins a split of a home-and-home series between the two teams.
The Wolf Pack had knocked off the Bruins by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night in Hartford.
Colton Hargrove and Austin Czarnik scored the Providence goals, both in the first period. Brandon Halverson made 36 saves in the Wolf Pack net.
“The biggest lesson for us out of that game is, any time you play a team in a back-to-back scenario if you have success the first night, the other team’s going to have desperation in their game,” Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge said. “Providence had that, and we didn’t have that consistently every shift.”
With both teams playing their third game in three days, the Bruins outshot the Wolf Pack 17-6 in the first period and got the only goal that they would need at the 5:13 mark, with Hargrove scoring his 14th of the season. After Emil Johansson had a pass blocked right back to him in front of the Wolf Pack net, the puck went on goal, and Halverson attempted to cover it. Hargrove jammed it out from underneath Halverson and over the goal line.
“In three-in-threes, a big part of trying to get the full two points is being able to score the first goal,” McCambridge said. “Both teams are tired, it just gives you that much more of an advantage when you are able to get that first one on the board. And Providence did a good job doing that.”
Czarnik then made it 2-0 at 17:04, converting a feed from Ryan Fitzgerald. After Fitzgerald found Czarnik on the left side, he put a forehand shot past Halverson’s catching glove.
The Wolf Pack had 12 shots to Providence’s nine in the second period, but couldn’t solve McIntyre, and the Bruins held Hartford to six shots in the third. That was despite being shorthanded for four minutes after Kenny Agostino was given slashing and interference minors at 8:55.
The Wolf Pack are now off until Friday night when they will travel to Springfield to take on the Thunderbirds. Faceoff is 7:05 PM and all of the action can be heard live on News Radio 1410 WPOP, and online at newsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio. Video streaming is available at ahllive.com.
The Wolf Pack’s next home game is this Saturday, March 3, another matchup with the Bruins. Faceoff is 3:00, and that is the Wolf Pack’s “Military Appreciation Day”, as the first 2,000 fans receive Wolf Pack “Dog Tags”, presented by Go Graphix, and the Wolf Pack wear special military-themed jerseys. Those jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds benefitting military-related charities.
