Greenville, SCThe Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, announced that Bretton Cameron has re-signed for the 2017-18 season and will compete in his seventh campaign in Greenville. The Swamp Rabbits veteran will also be entering his eighth season in professional hockey after recording career-bests in goals and assists.

Cameron, 28, has captained the Swamp Rabbits each of the last three seasons and served as an alternate captain for the team in 2013-14. Greenville’s longest tenured player produced the best numbers of his career last season, while also breaking some franchise records. His 64 games played, 44 points, 20 goals, and 24 assists were all career highs and the highest totals by a Greenville captain in franchise history.

The versatile forward had more goals on special teams than any Swamp Rabbits skater, with six power play goals and three shorthanded tallies. Cameron’s four game-winning goals tied him for second-most on the team last season.

“Bretton has been the leader of this team for years and he epitomizes the attitude and approach that we want every player to bring to the Swamp Rabbits brand of hockey,” said Head Coach Brian Gratz. “Since he joined the team seven years ago, his leadership and contributions both on and off the ice have continued to positively impact our organization. We are extremely excited to have him back to lead our team toward our ultimate goal of winning a championship.”

On Dec. 13, 2016, Cameron became the franchise record holder by playing in his 263rd game for Greenville and ended the season with 304 games with the organization. In his tenure with Greenville, the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native has collected 158 points (65G, 93A). All three statistics rank fourth in franchise history.

“There was no question about returning to the team this year. Returning to the playoffs was a good step last year, but there is unfinished business left for us to take care of,” said Cameron. “This is a whole new year and I’m excited to get back to work with the group that Coach Gratz has put together. We’re going to make sure Greenville is a tough place to play this year.

“The city and fan support has been building every year and it has become an amazing place for my wife and I to call home year round. I couldn’t think of a better place to be,” he continued.

The 5-foot-11 skater has logged 391 games in the ECHL and 414 games professionally since making his pro debut on Oct. 29, 2010, with the Stockton Thunder. Cameron has earned over 200 points (87G, 117A) in the ECHL and added six points (1G, 6A) in the AHL with Hartford and the Texas Stars.

Cameron joins 12 other players who have signed contracts with the Swamp Rabbits for the upcoming season. Greenville’s roster is now composed of forwards Bretton Cameron, Nick Betz, Ricky DeRosa, Austin McKay, Evan Jasper, Carter Sandlak, Jack Nevins, Allan McPherson, Joe Basaraba, and Caleb Herbert, as well as defensemen Sean Flanagan, Chad Duchesne, and Joe Houk.

Greenville begins the season on Oct. 13, 2017, at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena against the Wheeling Nailers. The puck drops for the Swamp Rabbits’ Opening Weekend at 7 p.m. ET in the first of two contests against the Nailers.
