The reshaping and rebuilding of the entire Rangers organization continues as the Wolf Pack sign McGill University graduate David Urquhart to an AHL contract.
“He’s a very good skater and he’s in great physical shape, and he’s got good hand skills.” Said Wolf Pack Head Coach Ken Gernander. “Those are the kind of things we were evaluating at the prospects camp. It’s not like a playoff series, where you’re getting a lot of physical play or anything like that, but he was very good in terms of his conditioning, he’s a good skater, he’s got decent hand skills, and hopefully with being 23, even though he’s a rookie he should have a good bit of maturity, too.”
Urquhart’s Head Coach at McGill, Martin Raymond says, “David Urquhart is a defenseman with great competitiveness, has excellent speed and strong offensive abilities. He can play a physical game, yet has the finesse to create offensively. He also has outstanding leadership skills, due to his discipline and personality.”
“He excels in the classroom as well and is extremely coachable. Having been recruited from Junior B, he has improved every year and I feel he has not yet reached his maximum potential. One of the best student-athletes I have had at McGill in the last 13 years. He is a solid candidate to play pro hockey.”

Blueliner Played Four Seasons at McGill University
Hartford Wolf Pack general manager Jim Schoenfeld announced today that the Wolf Pack have signed defenseman David Urquhart to an American Hockey League contract.
Urquhart, 23, completed a four-year career at McGill University in Montreal this past season, compiling totals of seven goals and 16 assists for 23 points, along with 75 penalty minutes, in 39 games. The Thorold, Ontario native captained the 2007-08 Redmen to the Ontario University Athletics championship, the first league title captured by McGill since 1946.
Urquhart amassed career numbers of 23 goals, 84 assists, 107 points and 330 penalty minutes in 147 games while at McGill and was three times voted an OUA All-Star. The 6-0, 195-pounder earned Second-Team All-Canadian honors in Canadian Inter-university Sport (CIS) in 2006-07, a season in which he registered four goals and 37 assists for 41 points in 42 games, becoming only the third blueliner in McGill history to be so recognized. Urquhart was also twice selected as the conference’s nominee for the Randy Gregg Trophy, which goes to the CIS player who best combines hockey achievement with academics and citizenship.
Further honors for Urquhart included being selected as McGill’s team MVP for 2006-07 and winning the 2008 Richard Pound Award, which salutes a graduating McGill student-athlete for outstanding proficiency and leadership in athletics.
