The Greenville Road Warriors head southeast tonight to renew the Palmetto State Rivalry as they pay a visit to the South Carolina Stingrays. Greenville is 2-1-0 against the Stingrays this season after picking up a pair of wins on October 29 and 30. Faceoff from the North Charleston Coliseum is scheduled for 7:05.
RECAPPING THE ACTION:
11/13/10 – GRW 3 – FLA 0
The Road Warriors received a pair of goals from Brendan Connolly, including one while shorthanded, to pace the offense as Greenville completed a three-game sweep of the Florida Everblades. Nic Riopel posted 32 saves as the rookie goalie earned his first professional shutout. Greenville was particularly strong on the penalty kill with a five-for-five effort last Saturday, and for the weekend the Road Warriors limited the Everblades to one power play goal in 16 chances.
11/14/10 – REA 3 – S.C. 2
The Stingrays wrapped up a three-game northern road trip by dropping their fifth straight game. Reading scored with 5:48 remaining as the Royals’ captain Ryan Cruthers netted the game winning goal. Pierre-Luc O’Brien and Rob Ricci scored for the Stingrays while goalie Shane Connelly turned in 23 saves in a losing effort. South Carolina was out-scored 13-8 on its road trip but was never defeated by more than two goals in a game.
WHAT’S ON TAP FOR TONIGHT
Greenville has been dominant at home winning seven of its nine games at the BI-LO Center, but is looking for its first road win of the season tonight. In their two road games at Gwinnett on November 6 and 7 the Road Warriors dropped the games to the Gladiators by scores of 5-3 and 6-1. A major factor was Gwinnett’s power play which scored three times in each of those games.
Tonight the Road Warriors will be without their prime goal scoring weapon against the Stingrays. Second-year pro Andrew Carroll had torched South Carolina for five goals, and an assist, in just three games. Carroll has since been loaned to Abbotsford in the American Hockey League where he has one goal in six games for the Heat. Justin Bowers (1G, 5A) and Julien Brouillette (2G, 1A) have had success against the Stingrays this season and could be looked at to replace some of Carroll’s production.
Greenville and South Carolina have had polar opposite schedules to begin this season. While Greenville has only played two of its 36 road games so far, South Carolina has only played three games at the North Charleston Coliseum. The road has not been kind to the Stingrays where they have a 2-6-0 mark and have lost five of their last six. South Carolina went 1-1-1 against Florida in its home opener weekend on November 5, 6, and 7.
