GREENVILLE, SC – The Palmetto State Rivalry continues tonight with the Greenville Road Warriors paying a visit to the South Carolina Stingrays for a 7:05 p.m. match up in North Charleston. The Road Warriors are looking for retribution after falling to South Carolina last night.
RECAPPING THE ACTION:
1/21/11 – GRW 3 – S.C.5
The Road Warriors carried the play for the first period and earned a 3-2 lead for their efforts. It was South Carolina, though, that got the better of the play in the last two period and scored three unanswered goals to pick up the win on the Road Warriors inaugural “Pink in the Rink” night. Trevor Glass’ second pro goal opened the scoring at 4;49 and left the Stingrays playing catch-up for the rest of the period. A Trent Campbell goal tied the score at 7:04, but Greenville’s Mark Voakes countered 11 seconds later to put the Road Warriors back on top. It was same song, second verse when David de Kastrozza tallied at 17:12 of the first then Connor Shields answered back 28 seconds later to close out the first period’s scoring. At 8:31 of the second a power play goal by Dustin Stevenson tied the game at three and set the stage for the ‘Rays to complete their comeback in the third. Josh Godfrey potted a power play marker which was followed by Tommy Goebel 55 seconds later which put enough distance to prevent a comeback by the Road Warriors.
WHAT’S ON TAP FOR TONIGHT:
The Palmetto State Rivalry will have its second installment of 2011 played tonight with the Road Warriors and Stingrays facing off at the North Charleston Coliseum. Last night South Carolina struck down the Road Warriors 5-3 in Greenville’s inaugural “Pink in the Rink” game. The Road Warriors are 5-4-0 against South Carolina including a 2-2-0 mark in North Charleston. The teams have traded 2-0 shutouts in this building on Dec. 4 (GRW win) and Dec. 31 (S.C. win). Games between these clubs at the North Charleston Coliseum have been typically low-scoring affairs this season. The average combined goals total is 3.75 and neither team has won by more than two goals.
Power plays should be cherished and taken advantage of when the Road Warriors and Stingrays meet. Only six teams have taken fewer minor penalties than the Road Warriors’ 209 while South Carolina has the 10th fewest minors at 219. Greenville has earned 17 PP chances in four games in this building. The Road Warriors have scored on two of those chances and have not posted more than one in a game in this building.
Since coming to the Road Warriors from Portland of the AHL, Jacob Lagace has been a playmaking force with five assists in five games. The newcomer has done all of his damage at even strength and is a +5 for his efforts. With the Road Warriors, Lagace already has as many multi-point games (2) in five games as he did in 29 games with the Pirates. He also has the same amount of assists (5) as he has shots on goal (5) in his time with Greenville.
