The Charlotte Checkers are pleased to announce that the Charlotte Hockey Hall of Fame presented by American Airlines will install its first group of inductees during tonight’s game against the Gwinnett Gladiators.

Patrick J. Kelly:
The ECHL Championship trophy bears the name of Patrick J. Kelly who was the league’s first ever commissioner during the first eight seasons. As the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers, he compiled a record of 146-75-12 over four seasons and led the team to two regular season titles and two championships and is currently the Commissioner Emeritus of the ECHL.

Felix Sabates:
Sabates, along with Carl Scheer and NASCAR drivers Kyle and Richard Petty, established The Charlotte Professional Sports Team Incorporated in the 1990’s. It was under his ownership that the Checkers won the league championship (then known as the Riley Cup) in 1996 and in November of 2005 saw one of the largest crowds in team history of 10,894.

Carl Scheer:
Carl Scheer has a special place in the hearts of Checkers fans when he along with Felix Sabates helped rebirth the Charlotte Checkers in 1993. In the first season, the team advanced to the postseason and averaged more than 8,000 fans per game. During his storied career, he helped create the Slam Dunk Contest held annually at the NBA All-Star Game and is responsible for helping execute the merger between the American Basketball Association and the National Basketball Association. He continues to be part of Checkers hockey as a special consultant to the team.

Jim McNulty:
He began his hockey career in Charlotte with the Clippers back in 1956 and played 11 consecutive seasons while the team was in the EHL. He holds the team records for points (775), goals (346), and games played (620). He is also second all-time in assists with 429. McNulty was selected to the EHL all-star team that played against the Soviet Union team in January of 1964.

Darryl Noren:
Coming over from the rival Greenville Grrrowl during his fifth season as a pro, Darryl Noren quickly helped mold the Checkers into a championship team. During his time in Charlotte, he became the all-time Checkers leader with 403 points, 174 goals and 229 assists. He was a member of the Checkers from 1994-2000 and a member of the Riley Cup championship team in 1996 serving as team captain and later becoming a player/assistant coach.
