New York RNEW YORK RANGERS 2010-11 TEAM AWARD WINNERS

New York, April 7, 2010 – The New York Rangers have announced the 2010-11 Team Awards, including the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, presented by Lightspeed Trading; the Rangers’ MVP; the Players’ Player Award and the John Halligan Good Guy Award.

The Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, presented by Lightspeed Trading, as voted on by the fans, recognizing the player who performs “above and beyond the call of duty,” was awarded to Brandon Prust.  The award is named after New York City police officer Steven McDonald, who was shot and injured in the call of duty in November of 1988.  This award has been given annually to the player who fans believe plays with extra effort on the ice.

Prust currently is tied for second in the NHL in shorthanded points (seven), tied for third in shorthanded goals (five) and is tied for fourth in fighting majors (18).  He ranks fourth on the Rangers in hits (155).

The Rangers’ MVP, voted on by the New York Rangers media, was awarded to Henrik Lundqvist.  This is the fifth consecutive year that Lundqvist has won the award, which marks the most consecutive years an individual has been named Rangers’ MVP.

Lundqvist currently leads the NHL in shutouts (11), and is tied for sixth in the league in wins (35), time on ice (3,886:47), save percentage (.923) and goals against average (2.27).  Lundqvist is the only goalie in NHL history to post 30-or-more wins in each of his first six seasons, and the first Rangers goaltender in team history to post six straight 30-win seasons.

The Players’ Player Award, voted on by the Ranger players, was given to Ryan Callahan.  The award recognizes the Rangers player who best exemplifies what it means to be a teammate.  Callahan was also named the winner of the John Halligan Good Guy Award, selected by the NY chapter of the PHWA, which recognizes players’ cooperation with the media.  The award is named in honor of John Halligan, a longtime Rangers and NHL Public Relations executive, who passed away in 2010.

Callahan is serving in his second year as Alternate Captain of the New York Rangers.  He ranks fifth among all NHL forwards in blocked shots (77) and tenth in hits (224).  Callahan leads the Rangers in power play goals (10) and game winning goals (five), ranks second in goals (24), points (49) and power play points (15) and third in assists (25).
