Phil Esposito Named Head Coach / Director of Hockey Operations

Danbury WhalersDanbury Whalers President and General Manager Herm Sorcher announced that Phil Esposito has been named Head Coach / Director of Hockey Operations for the 2011-12 hockey season.

“Espo” spent last year as the Whalers Assistant Coach and was part of an organization that promoted 12 players to the American Hockey League (AHL), East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), & Central Hockey League (CHL).  Phil brings eight years of professional playing experience and five seasons of professional coaching.

 

A native of East Haven, Connecticut, Esposito had a playing career which began at the United States Military Academy (NCAA), in West Point, New York.  As a player, Esposito made stops in the International Hockey League, the ECHL, the United Hockey League and the Southern Hockey League. His best professional years were in the ECHL for the Johnstown Chiefs and two seasons with Mobile Mysticks.

Esposito has a rich history in Connecticut hockey, stemming back from youth leagues in East Haven, to his years at the Salisbury Prep School in Litchfield, and the inaugural season of the New Haven Knights in the UHL.

“Our goal in Danbury this year is focused on one target, to be the Federal Hockey League Champions,” The Whalers new Head Coach said. “Our guys will go through the wall to get there and the Danbury Whalers players will do whatever it takes to bring the Cup to this incredible city.  I have always said it is an honor and privilege to be a part of a professional hockey franchise, to do it in this city – it is second to none.”

He has also worked in hockey as a coach and administrator. He also works for USA Hockey as a Coach Developer.
