Connecticut Whale head coach Ken Gernander was livid after Saturday night’s game against the Springfield Falcons after an obvious illegal hit to the head of Mats Zuccarello by NHL veteran Adam Mair went unpunished. Gernander told reporters after that game and again after Sunday’s contest that the tape had been forwarded to the league office and that it was in the league’s hands to determine what punishment, if any would be doled out.
Well, Gernander proved to be correct and the league has announced that Mair has been suspended for four (4) games for what they called,”an illegal check to the head of an opponent.” Mair will miss Springfield’s games Wednesday (Oct. 26) at Manchester, Friday (Oct. 28) vs. Hershey, Saturday (Oct. 29) vs. St. John’s and Nov. 4 vs. Adirondack.
The league also announced some suspensions being handed out that involved some ex-Wolf Pack players:
• Portland Pirates forward Ryan Hollweg has been suspended for one (1) game as a consequence of an illegal check to the head of an opponent in a game vs. Providence on Oct. 22. Hollweg will miss Portland’s game tonight (Oct. 25) at St. John’s.
• Lake Erie Monsters forward Hugh Jessiman has been suspended for four (4) games as a consequence of a boarding incident in a game at Toronto on Oct. 23. Jessiman will miss Lake Erie’s games Wednesday (Oct. 26) vs. Syracuse, Friday (Oct. 28) and Sunday (Oct. 30) vs. Toronto and Nov. 2 at Grand Rapids.
