PORTLAND, ME – October 26, 2018 – Alex Kile opened the scoring at 7:24 of the opening period, but the Adirondack Thunder got the next three and defeated the Mariners 3-1 on Friday night at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls, NY
After killing two early penalties, Kile – with the help of his linemates Terrence Wallin and Dawson Leedahl, dug the puck out of the corner and took it to the front of the net for the first goal of the game. Antoine Waked was called for a head check at 17:01 which led to Peter MacArthur’s game-tying goal 21 seconds later. On the next shift, Mike Szmatula led a two-on-one and powered a shot past Brandon Halverson to give Adirondack the lead. The two Thunder goals were scored 42 seconds apart.
The remainder of the game lacked quality scoring chances, but Halverson and Thunder goaltender Colton Phinney made key saves to hold the score at 2-1. The Mariners were granted a power play in the final minute of the game but Connor Riley got behind the defense and tossed in an empty-netter with 28 seconds to go to seal the game.
Phinney made 24 saves on 25 shots while Halverson stopped 31 of 33.
