The Greenville Road Warriors will travel away from the BI-LO Center for the first time tonight as they visit The Arena at Gwinnett Center to take on the Gladiators. Greenville closed out its season-opening six-game home stand with a 3-1 win over Gwinnett last night.
RECAPPING THE ACTION
11/5: GRW-3 vs. GWT-1
The Gladiators got the drop on the Road Warriors thanks to Michael Forney’s goal at 16:53 of the first period. Greenville kept Gwinnett from extending the advantage by killing off a 4-on-3 power play late in the first. The Road Warriors’ third line chipped in a goal at 2:38 of the second to put the home team on the board. Brendan Connolly cashed in on a 2-on-1 thanks to a nice feed from newly acquired Chris Morehouse. Sean Berkstresser picked up his first point of the season with the secondary assist. Justin Bowers gave Greenville its first lead at 4:02 of the third with his second goal in as many games and then Mark-Olivier Vallerand added an insurance tally with 1:58 left to play. Nic Riopel out-dueled Chris Carrozzi for the win as he turned in a 31-save performance.
WHAT’S ON TAP FOR TONIGHT
Greenville will get its first test on the road this evening. Gwinnett is 2-1-0 on home ice this season and has out-scored opponents 13-9. Prior to tonight the Gladiators had played for of their last five games on the road (2-1-1). Greenville was 4-1-1 over its season-opening six-game home stand.
Justin Bowers will try to build on his two-game goal scoring streak. Bowers’ goals on 10/30 vs. South Carolina and last night vs. Gwinnett were both game winning goals. The third-year forward is the only forward on the Road Warriors’ roster to score a game-winning goal at this point of the season.
The Road Warriors will be putting the ECHL’s longest current winning streak on the line tonight. Winners of three in a row, the Road Warriors sport a .750 winning percentage which is tied for second best in the league with Wheeling and Alaska. Only the Elmira Jackals, who are also working on a three-game win streak, have a better winning percentage at .778. The Road Warriros have out-scored opponents 12-4 over the winning streak and Nic Riopel has been in net for each of the wins.
