The ECHL announced today that Charlotte Checkers netminder Ryan Munce has been named the Reebok ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Dec. 7-13.
The 24 year old went 2-0-0 with a shutout and stopped 79 of 80 shots he faced, giving him a goals-against average of 0.50 and save percentage of .988 over two games in Florida. It is the third time in his five-year career that Munce has taken home Goaltender of the Week honors.
Munce, who leads the Checkers with five wins, earned his first shutout of the season by blocking all 47 shots in a 3-0 win at Florida on Saturday after making 32 saves in a 4-1 win against the Everblades on Friday. He is 3-0-0 with a goals-against average of 0.45 in his last three games to improve to 5-2-0 overall.
In 2008-09, while playing for the now-defunct Mississippi Sea Wolves, he led the ECHL in games played (54), minutes (3,219), shots against (2,024), saves (1,852) and shootout wins (6).

Before joining the pro ranks, Munce tended goal for three seasons for the Ontario Hockey League’s Sarnia Sting. He was a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2003 World Under-18 Championships.
The Checkers (14-7-3-0) will return to Time Warner Cable Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 16 to host South Carolina. Game time is 7 p.m. and ticket information can be obtained by calling 704-342-4-ICE or visiting www.gocheckers.com.
