HARTFORD, CT – Covid-19 continues to be the top story worldwide. Its effects are almost too wide to document, and it’s had a profound effect on the hockey world as well.
UCONN-MAINE POSTPONED
Because of positive cases on its Orono Campus the University of Maine has paused all winter athletics for two weeks. That decision has led to the postponing of this weekend’s Hockey East matches at Freitas Ice Forum between the UCONN Huskies and the Black Bears.
A preliminary return-to-play date of December 8th has been issued by Maine to restart athletics.
A rescheduled date has not been set and UCONN will not play this weekend. The COVID-19 positive tests for the UCONN women’s team had no bearing on the hockey team.
In addition to the UCONN-Maine game, there were other Hockey East changes in this weekend’s college hockey on-ice action.
UMASS-Lowell will host Providence College for just one game on Saturday after a scheduled series with Northeastern was postponed.
Boston College edged out UMASS-Amherst 4-3 on Friday evening as freshmen, Jack McBain, the son of former New Haven Senator, Andrew McBain, scored two goals. His second was a gorgeous 35-foot wrist shot from the right-wing side. The shot was a rising wrister over the shoulder of Minutemen goalie, Marty Murray.
In the WCHA, Lake Superior State was set to play Ferris State, but that game was postponed. Instead, they will play Division-III’s Adrian College (NCHA).
The R.I.T. Purple Knights (AHA) who had canceled their season, is back on. They will, however, play with no spectators and take on Clarkson University (ECACHL).

On that same Beijing team, ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger goalie, Jeremy Smith, received a one-year contract extension.
